‘Supergirl’: How Will the Coronavirus Pandemic Impact Season 5?

The CW’s Supergirl Season 5 is ramping up the intensity as the show zooms toward the finale. Supergirl and company are still dealing with the aftermath of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which left the heroes of the Arrowverse to rebuild their lives on the newly created Earth-Prime. In the shows, a deadly red wave wiped out the multiverse. But the real world is facing its own crisis in the form of a coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak is much more serious than anything that stems from the pages of a comic book. Based on advice from the Centers for Disease Control, many television and film production companies have stopped filming in hopes of combatting the surge of sickness.

Has ‘Supergirl’ suspended production?

In the fantasy world where Kara and the other heroes live, they often use weapons from the imaginations of sci-fi writers. Real-world dangers like the coronavirus respond to science-based solutions created by medical experts.

While the pandemic has paralyzed many communities, the CDC advises strategies to reduce the spread of the disease. The agency recommends avoiding close contact and canceling large group events.

With CDC recommendations in mind, Supergirl was among many shows under the Warner Bros. Television Group to suspend shooting for the time being. MSN published this statement released by the media company:

With the rapidly changing events related to COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution, Warner Bros. Television Group is halting production on some of our 70+ series and pilots currently filming or about to begin.  There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on any of our productions, but the health and safety of our employees, casts and crews remains our top priority. During this time, we will continue to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control as well as local officials and public health professionals in each city where our productions are based.

How will halting production on ‘Supergirl’ affect Season 5?

Supergirl has been on a hot streak of high-energy storylines in the back half of Season 5. As the characters deal with the fallout from Crisis and Lex Luthor’s reign of power, the episodes are building to what could be an intense finale.

Unfortunately, according to TVLine, the finale has yet to be completed. With only 21 of the 22 episodes finished, could this mean that Supergirl Season 5 will end prematurely?

Regardless of the shooting hiatus, The CW scheduled new episodes of Supergirl in the short term rather than opting for encores. Season 5 Episode 16 will premiere on Sunday, March 22, while Season 5 episode 17 is expected to run on Sunday, March 29.

What needs to be wrapped up by the season finale?

Supergirl Season 5 has spurred many burning questions, which will hopefully be answered by the end of the season. Will Kara and Lena mend their broken friendship? Will Nia and Brainy reconcile? Will Obsidian North continue to put consumers at risk with the company’s virtual reality technology? What role will Leviathan play in the future? Is Alex really done working for the D.E.O.? Will Lex remain in power heading into Season 6?

It remains to be seen which loose ends will be tied up by the end of Supergirl Season 5. Here’s hoping that production can resume in time to create a season finale worthy of the Kryptonian hero. Supergirl airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
