Supergirl ended the first half of its second season with an action-packed midseason finale. In addition to serving as the kick off to the four-way crossover with The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the episode also featured the latest evil scheme from Cadmus and budding romances for both Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh). So what’s next on Supergirl Season 2? Here’s what’s coming after the show’s winter hiatus.
1. Cadmus isn’t done plotting yet
In Supergirl‘s midseason finale, Cadmus — led by Lillian Luthor (Brenda Strong) — attempted to unleash Project Medusa, a virus made specifically to target and kill aliens. Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) ultimately stops them from carrying out their plans, neutralizing the virus and even turning her mother over to authorities.
But just because their plot was foiled doesn’t mean Cadmus is done yet. The evil organization will continue to make plenty of trouble for Kara, J’onn, and other aliens. As executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently told Entertainment Weekly, “We have absolutely not seen the last of Lillian and Cadmus. Sometimes an enemy is deadliest when they are trapped.”
He also revealed that Cadmus will not slow down now that Lillian is imprisoned, instead likely switching to new leadership. “How Lillian deals with her incarceration and what happens moving forward will make up part of the storyline of the next batch of episodes,” he said. “But Cadmus is a multi-tiered organization, and like the worst terrorist groups, you cut down one head, another rises in its place.”
2. Mon-El and Kara’s romance will be further explored
After a couple weeks of hinting at a potential romance between Kara and her Daxamite friend, Mon-El (Chris Wood), the midseason finale finally saw the two put their chemistry to the test. Faced with his possible demise after getting infected by Medusa, Mon-El kisses Kara — only to pretend he doesn’t remember doing so once he’s healed.
Though he may be playing dumb for now, his feelings haven’t disappeared, as Kreisberg recently suggested. “The next episode is a big Kara/Mon-El story that we’re really excited about,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “They’re both obviously playing coy about what happened, neither admitting that they actually did kiss, so how and when that comes out is going to be fun and delicious.”
3. Lena’s character will continue to be tested
Lena seemingly proved her trustworthiness when she helped stop her mother from enacting Project Medusa. But is she really different from her family or will she eventually live up to the Luthor name and turn bad? It’s a question that will continue to be explored throughout the rest of Season 2.
“This season is all about testing Lena,” Kreisberg explained. She’s passed “the goodness tests ” that have popped up so far, but as he suggests, “You always have to wonder if there is going to be a bridge too far for her where she will inherit the Luthor mantle of being a true enemy for Supergirl.”
4. Alex and Maggie will navigate their new relationship
Having successfully come out to her mother, Alex (Chyler Leigh) is in a much better place in the finale, even acknowledging that the realization of her sexual identity wasn’t tied solely to her feelings for Maggie (Floriana Lima). But after having a near-death experience in the episode, Maggie soon reciprocates those feelings and the two share a kiss.
“It was really important for us to progress this relationship along and to have it pay off everything that came before it,” Kreisberg said of the blossoming relationship, per Entertainment Weekly. “Everyone who works on this show loves Alex Danvers and wants good things for her and Maggie, so we decided to go for it.”
5. Supergirl will battle the Dominators again
By the time Season 2 returns, Kara will have battled the Dominators alongside Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin), Oliver Queen/Arrow (Stephen Amell), and all of the Legends in DC’s four-way crossover event. But while the events of that crossover won’t have a long-term impact on Supergirl, it looks like the race of hyperintelligent aliens will have a role in future episodes.
“This is not the last you see of the Dominators,” Kreisberg recently confirmed, per ComicBook.com. “The Dominators will return on Supergirl later this season.”
6. Mister Mxyzptl will appear
According to ComicBook.com, famed Superman villain Mr. Mxyzptlk is coming to Supergirl in the second half of season 2. The character will reportedly appear in two episodes, although casting and other details of his appearance have not been revealed.
In the comics, Mr. Mxyzptlk is a powerful and impish fifth-dimensional villain whose face-offs with Superman are infused with a sense of fun rather than malice. But with access to fifth-dimensional technology, his powers far outweigh that of third dimensional beings and he still causes plenty of destruction. The only way he can be stopped is by tricking him into saying or spelling his own name backwards, which will return him to his home in the fifth dimension for a minimum of ninety day
7. Kara and Barry will get musical
The four-way crossover won’t be the only time that Kara and Barry cross paths this season. The two are set to have a musical crossover later in Supergirl Season 2, featuring both original songs and covers. Though specific details of the event have not been revealed yet, it will reportedly take place in the 13th episodes of each series.
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
