What Superhero Is Dwayne Johnson Playing In the DCEU? Meet Black Adam
If there’s one actor who’s meant to be a superhero, it’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Fans of the wrestler-turned-Hollywood-powerhouse have been begging for this for years. And now, it’s finally happening. Here’s what we know about Johnson’s new role in the DC Extended Universe.
The Rock is known for many films
Everyone knows that Johnson began his career as the Rock when he was a professional wrestler. He became a huge draw in the WWE. However, he then set his sights on a new career as an actor. He began his rise in the early ’00s, and since then, has become a household name.
Johnson broke out with roles in The Mummy and The Scorpion King. He then entered the Fast and the Furious franchise, which he has remained a part of to this day. Additionally, Johnson is now known for other big-budget projects like the Jumanji films.
Johnson’s role has been in the works for years
Johnson always made sense as a superhero. It was just a matter of finding him the right vehicle. The news first broke more than five years ago that he was set to portray Black Adam in the DCEU. But since then, we’ve heard very little.
It wasn’t until 2017 that more concrete information arrived. Initially, the thought was that Shazam and Black Adam would share the screen. DC then opted to make Shazam! instead, and introduce Black Adam later. So we’ve been waiting impatiently ever since for any solid details.
The first ‘Black Adam’ artwork is here
At long last, some of that desired information is here. On Nov. 14, 2019, Johnson shared the first official artwork for Black Adam. In a lengthy Instagram post, the actor wrote about how he always wanted to be a superhero — specifically, Superman. However, he found a better fit.
“I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become BLACK ADAM,” writes Johnson. “The role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”
Who is Black Adam in the DCEU?
Black Adam dates back a very long way. The character is the alter-ego of Teth-Adam, an ancient Egyptian who is tied to the Shazamily. Like most characters in the comic-book world, his origins have been revised on numerous occasions throughout various iterations and stories.
Regardless, it is definitive that Black Adam is a complicated character. He’s specifically referred to as a supervillain on most occasions, though there have been times in which he was shown to be on the side of good. And Johnson specifically calls him “a superhero” in the above post.
Here’s what we know about the film
So far, very little is known about Black Adam. Darren Lemke was originally attached to the script, but more recently, Adam Sztykiel, who wrote Johnson’s 2018 feature Rampage, was set to write. Jaume Collet-Serra was announced as the director earlier this year.
The “rebellious, one-of-a-kind” superhero is scheduled to make his debut in the DCEU on Dec. 22, 2021. Stay tuned for plenty more announcements in the coming months and years!
