SuperM’s first album reached the No.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 200 chart

Every week, Billboard ranks the most popular albums in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. SuperM’s EP, SuperM: The 1st Mini Album, came out on the No.1 spot. While all of the members from SuperM are from established K-pop groups, it is the members’ first time ever breaking into the top 10 spots of the Billboard Hot 200 chart.

According to Billboard, “SuperM’s The 1st Mini Album starts with 168,000 units, and of that sum, 164,000 were in album sales. The rest of the album’s first-week comprised less than 1,000 TEA units, and a little over 3,000 SEA units. The latter sum equates to 4.9 million on-demand audio streams during the tracking week for the seven tracks on the album.”

SuperM’s debut on the chart was helped by SM Entertainment and Capitol Records motivating fans to purchase the album. According to Billboard, there were multiple album arrangements that encouraged fans to buy the album.

The 1st Mini Album had more than 60 merchandise/album bundles available to purchase through their official web stores, a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with their upcoming arena tour and eight different CD variants of the album… The act also staged a week-long pop-up shop in Los Angeles during street week, where fans could buy the CD…,” wrote Keith Caulfield for Billboard.

Some fans were skeptical about SuperM at first

When SM Entertainment first announced the launch of SuperM with Capitol Records, the hashtag #SuperGroupDisbandmentParty trended on Twitter. Because SuperM is made up of members from different K-pop groups, fans worried what SuperM meant for the members and their original groups. The most prominent complaints involved EXO’s next comeback, what Ten and Lucas’ participation meant for WayV, and NCT fans worried about Mark and Taeyong being overworked.

Despite the skepticism, some fans fought against the disbandment hashtag with #SuperGroupSupportParty. They encouraged fans to support the members no matter what. As teaser trailers for SuperM’s album dropped, excitement about the debut grew. By the time SuperM’s debut rolled around, fans were ready to support the group.

“From a disbandment trend to a celebratory trend, I am living for this kind of character development. #SUPERMisnumber1Party,” a fan tweeted.

“From the beginning ppl have been against them trending nasty hashtags but to see them overcome that & unite multiple fandoms & just make kpop fun again I am so proud of the boys. They deserve everything & this is just the beginning #SuperMisNumber1Party,” a fan wrote on Twitter.

SuperM fans celebrated the group’s Billboard accomplishment on social media

While SuperM is made up of some of the most popular and talented idols in K-pop, a debut at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart was not a guarantee. After the news of SuperM’s accomplishment spread online, fans expressed how proud they were of the group on social media.

“SUPERM FIRST KOREAN ACT TO DEBUT AT #1 ON THE BILLBOARD 200 WITH A DEBUT ALBUM ! @SuperM#SuperMisNumber1Party,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“I’M JOPPING. YOU’RE JOPPING. WE’RE ALL JOPPING. #SuperMisNumber1Party,” a fan tweeted.
