‘Superstore’ Shuts Down Production Due to Coronavirus — What This Means for America Ferrera’s Exit

Superstore is shutting down production for the rest of its fifth season. This means the season will have one less episode than originally planned. Production of Superstore was shut down due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This leaves America Ferrera’s planned exit of Superstore up in the air.

America Ferrera filmed her last scene of season 5

Ferrera recently posted a farewell video on her Instagram story on March 13.

“So today is unexpectedly my last day shooting on Superstore for the season. We’re shutting down production,” she said in her Instagram story. “I’m about to go shoot my last scene. None of my cast members are here, and this is not how we expected to be ending the season.”

She added, “I assume [this] means we’ll be coming back when things clear up to finish Amy’s storyline.”

The actress also shared a video of her cleared out trailer with the caption, “Bye Bye trailer!!”

America Ferrera announced she is leaving ‘Superstore’

On Feb. 28, Ferrera announced she planned to leave Superstore after season 5. She made the announcement in an Instagram post where she thanked everyone involved with Superstore.

The Instagram post read:

“The last five years on Superstore have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career. Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew has given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller. I’m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed in the show, and I’m most thankful to the brilliant Justin Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of Superstore and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved Superstore family.”

The show is renewed for season 6

Superstore was renewed for season 6 midway through its fifth season.

“We’re thrilled that Superstore continues to speak to many important and topical issues while simultaneously being hilarious,” said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming for NBC Entertainment, in a statement.

Production being halted means that Amy’s storyline will most likely have to be finished in season 6. A great deal of season 5 has hinted that Amy could possibly be offered a job at corporate, allowing her to move on from the Cloud 9 store and giving Ferrera a chance to leave the show.

Fans are worried about Amy and Jonah

While it’s understandable why production for season 5 of Superstore stopped, this has not done anything to ease fans’ minds about Ferrera’s exit. A great deal of fans wonder what will happen to the relationship between Ferrera’s character Amy and Ben Feldman’s character Jonah.

Jonah has always been anti-corporate, and some fans worry Ferrera’s exit could mean the couple will break up. If so, this would leave Jonah heartbroken during season 6 of Superstore.

“There’s really no future for jonah and amy after the longest slow burn and barely interactions this season we get paid DUST,” one fan tweeted.

“If amy and jonah break up i will be suing nbc for emotional damages,” tweeted a fan.
