Tamar Braxton announces new VH1 show

Braxton announced her new show and spoke exclusively to The Jasmine Brand during the early stages of development. She told the outlet at the time:

I have a VH1 show coming up that got picked up for 20 episodes. I’m really excited about it. It’s kinda like a musical sort of. But it’s really, really good and entertaining. I’ve always been into acting. I started off with Tyler Perry, a lot of people don’t know that. I did Madea Goes to Jail. We had a great time. Ever since then I’ve had the acting bug. Then the reality show came and the music bug definitely never goes away.

Turns out, the premise of the show went in a different direction from music and they landed on a reality beauty series. The show was greenlit and moved to production in Jan. 2020.

Tamar Braxton’s WeTV spinoff ‘Get Ya Life’ to debut but premiere stalls

Braxton announced her second WeTV spinoff last year. An Instagram fan page dedicated to the singer and reality star posted several videos and images of her filming the spinoff, including a trip to Nigeria to meet her boyfriend’s family and her recording what appeared to be music videos.

When I asked my @tamarbraxton to come with me to my mom’s birthday party in Nigeria I had no idea what to expect. I grew up in Lagos so I was excited to take her back home, but this was not one of our nice chill vacations under the warm Cancun resort sun ‍♂️ No! This was a trip to Lagos, a tough, hot city where the “hustle” never ends‍♂️. Not having lived there for almost 30 years I’d heard stories of how dangerous Lagos had become. They said night trips were too risky, kidnappings were regular and bribery was standard. Heck some US doctors told some of the staff we brought along not to eat the food . We braced ourselves for the unexpected but instead we experienced a colorful explosion of culture, intertwined with wildly imaginative and unapologetic tradition. The richly exquisite native cuisine can only be experienced, not described and all of this is surrounded by a vibrant, pulsating sense of optimism that is apparent the moment one steps off the airplane ✈️. We had the time of our lives in Lagos!!! We danced all night at a cool upper-end Lagos night club; jumped into a studio session with 3 of the topmost musicians in the country; visited @nikeartgallery owned by a legendary fashion designer and her charming husband; joined an impromptu dance competition at an equally impromptu family reunion surrounded by 30 of my closest family members; and hung out with a visionary 21st century king with charm and personality who was surrounded by deep historical and cultural norms and traditions that remind one of how proud and strong our country must have looked and felt like long before the colonialists arrived. ✊ Did I mention the open-air market where a 30-minute haggling session over a pair of handmade flip flops is standard and the Fulani “mallams” are all cool smooth talkers! How about the time when Tamar got mad at me because I made her walk in this surreal darkened alley one afternoon with dirty rainwater up to our ankles; later Tamar would “make it rain” at my dear mom’s 80th birthday party! We did this all in 5-packed, fun-filled days and the best part is we documented every part of it just for you so stay tuned!

Her first Braxton Family Values spinoff, Tamar & Vince, chronicled her life with her then-husband Vincent Herbert and captured her recording three albums, touring, filming The Real, the birth of her son and the eventual demise of their relationship.

In an Instagram live video, she gave a brief synopsis of what the new show would document.

So, it’s a show that originally was supposed to be about my life and me putting together a possible record. And how my life is now without Vince in the picture, me dating David, me being a single mom and also running my businesses all myself, without an agent, without a manager but also elevating. And that’s the reason I don’t have an agent or a manager because sometimes you outgrow situations. Sometimes the people around you keep you stifled and down. So, this show is about me breaking out and being everything that I am.

Teasers for the series were released and given a premiere date for April that came and went. It’s unclear if the coronavirus shutdown has contributed to the delay.

Braxton has been open about her disappointment with WeTV production and admitted she was nervous about the outcome of the series due to what she considered negative diting in the past. Get Ya Life has also been removed from WeTV’s show page, leaving fans wondering if it’s still a go.

To Catch A Beautician will air on VH1 on Monday, May 25 at 9 PM  EST.
