Tamron Hall Preempts Rumors of Any Battle With Kelly Clarkson With One Powerful Sentence

Television personality Tamron Hall kicked off her highly anticipated talk show last week. Hall launched her program on the same day as another high-profile celeb, The Voice’s Kelly Clarkson. While some are making comparisons between the two and possibly attempting to put them in ‘battle’ mode against each other, Hall is having none of it and said as much on her premiere.

New show, new start

Hall’s highly publicized exit from the Today Show in 2017 due to the hiring of Megyn Kelly still lingers on the minds of some fans, and Hall as well. She spoke of her departure on her show’s opening day. “(Imagine) you’ve been putting in the work, and suddenly your employer says they’re phasing you out,” Hall said, as reported by USA Today. “I had some suspicions, because I’m a reporter and I’m pretty intuitive, but no one wants to lose their job. It wasn’t about who I was losing it to – it was like a relationship where you’re putting in 100% and the person who’s putting in less has the nerve to break up with you.”

She confessed that she made the situation look easier than it actually was. “On the outside, it looked like it was all together. ‘Look at her, she’s walking out, her head up,’” Hall says of the day she left the popular NBC news program, according to Good Housekeeping. “My head is never going to be bowed, but I had to pray not to be broken.”

Now, she’s focused – and very excited – on the future with her new show. “It is one of the most exciting things in my life currently, and perhaps in my 48 years,” Hall said. “I never imagined this. Never. It’s surreal, it’s like being on a magic carpet and you’re just floating.”

She compares her fresh start on the airwaves to another famous face who jumpstarted her career in a new venue. “I watched Ellen [DeGeneres] rebuild her career from a sitcom star, to, as you say, ‘the fish that saved her life’ as Dory [in Finding Nemo], to somebody we love to watch every day… in some ways, this is kind of that,” Hall said.

Don’t even try

Hall immediately addressed her fellow daytime talk show host, Kelly Clarkson, who premiered her show on the same day. She congratulated the former American Idol winner on her new venture and stated in one strong, preemptive sentence that she won’t be a party to any negative banter that may be projected onto the two hosts. “I will not be in a position where you pit me against another woman,” she told the audience.

Hall told Good Housekeeping earlier this month that any publicity suggesting an argument between the two women is simply attempting to fuel gossip. “There’s not a head to head. Anyone who would write, ‘oh there’s a battle’ is simply looking for a headline,” she said, going on to praise her colleague in daytime television. “Kelly Clarkson will have a phenomenal show and I’m not just saying that, I’m saying that because I’m a fan of hers on American Idol, and she’s a fun-loving person. Her show is going to be different from mine, but we’re still talking.”

Creating community

Hall is hoping to create a more traditional show, following in the footsteps of legendary talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue. The television personality also strives for a feeling of community on her program, strategically placing the audience near to her. “I want them to be as close as humanly possible,” she explained. “It’s not a gimmick: It’s a part of my authentic journey as a journalist but also who I am as a person. I’m a hugger, I’m a toucher – I like that interaction.”

Hall is clearly ambitious in her professional life, yet is grounded personally. With her new husband, music executive Steve Greener, whom she wed earlier this year, and 4-month old son Moses, Hall has achieved a strong sense of self. “We are not the biggest job we’ve landed. We are not, even with motherhood, I love my son… [but] even he is not the total sum of my journey,” she said. “I’m not Tamron from the Today show. I’m Tamron.”
