Taylor Swift Literally Beat out Michael Jackson (Again) at the 2019 AMAs

The 2019 AMAs were truly all about Taylor Swift. The 29-year-old songstress was not only honored as the Artist of the Decade, but also Artist of the Year, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Album, and Favorite Music Video for “You Need To Calm Down.” The songwriter gave a rare medley performance of some of the biggest hits of her career. Swift started off with “The Man” and also sung “Love Story”, “I Knew You Were Trouble”, “Black Space”, “Shake It Off”, and, of course, “Lover” for a performance that Swifties will be talking about for weeks to come.

Taylor Swift gave a heartfelt speech after her AMA performance

In her speech for Artist of the Decade, Swift thanked her fans for allowing her to grow and change over the course of her career. She cited how important it was that they gave her permission to explore different styles and sounds. “I just remember, when I fell in love with music it was right around the time I realized how marvelous it was that an artist could transcend so many different phases and changes in people’s lives. So, you taught me that that’s a possibility,” the Lover artist declared.

Swift went on to gush about all the important milestones and memories she has created with fellow Swifties. She again thanked them for their unwavering support before sharing that she looked forward to continuously creating art for them. “All that matters to me is the memories that I have had with you guys, with you the fans, over the years. Guys, we’ve had fun, incredible, exhilarating, extraordinary times together, and may it continue. Thank you for being the reason why I am on this stage, from the very first day of my career until tonight. I love you with all of my heart,” the Cats actress confessed to her millions of loyal fans.

Swift has beat out Michael Jackson as the most awarded AMA artist

But, November 24, 2019, was important for Swift and her career in more ways than one. The songstress also shattered a record last night. With Swift’s six wins, she has officially surpassed the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, with the number of AMA wins she has secured. Jackson previously held the title for most AMAs won of any artist and was awarded 24 of them prior to his death. Swift, who entered into the 2019 AMAs with 23 awards, now holds the record with 29 of the fan-voted awards under her belt.

But, this isn’t the first time that Swift has beat out Jackson at the AMAs. Swift also took home the award for Artist of The Year back in 2009, which Jackson was also nominated for. Fans were stunned that Swift managed to take home the prize the very year that Jackson passed away. Even the “Fearless” singer was a little surprised and called being nominated amongst Jackson an “unimaginable honor” before thanking his family. As Swift also said in her 2009 speech “Music has never been ultimately about competition,” but nevertheless, we’re sure Swifties are proud of their fave for setting a new record.
