Fans of Taylor Swift have been anticipating new music from the pop star for some time now. Her 2017 album, Reputation, was a huge sensation, launching a massive tour that concluded in Nov. 2018, with a concert film released on Dec. 31, 2018. Now, it’s been months since Swift’s said much of anything about what’s to come for her. But a new tweet has sparked rumors of music on the horizon, and the date is an intriguing one.
The rumors started months ago with these Instagram posts
Taylor Swift fans are basically all detectives because the singer is known for dropping all kinds of hints in the days, weeks, and even months leading up to her release dates. In fact, if her Instagram posts don’t have a caption that identifies what they’re about (celebrating the New Year, a magazine cover, or her boyfriend Joe Alwyn’s movie winning awards, for example), these super fans dive into sleuth mode, dissecting what an image could mean.
After this year’s wave of speculation began, Swift seemed to shut things down fairly…swiftly. She posted a photo of her cat, Olivia, with a “surprised” look on her face, along with the caption, “ She just read all the theories.”
Swift does have one big project in the works
A few of Swift’s posts around that time were indicative of another project that she has going on. It was announced in 2018 that the singer, who previously acted in the ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day and the dystopian novel adaptation The Giver, has another film role on the horizon: She’s going to be in the movie version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats.
Swift, along with the rest of the film’s all-star cast, hasn’t spoken much about what’s to come, but she did reveal her role in an Instagram post. It would appear that she filmed her scenes as Bombalurina back in January 2019.
Her latest tweet points to this date
Now, fans are super excited, because it looks like new music is finally on its way. In her usual wordless way, Swift posted a countdown at midnight on April 13, 2019, indicating that from that moment, it was exactly 13 days until…something. As 13 is her favorite number, this was on par with her usual announcements. But there’s something else really big coming on April 26, 2019: The U.S. premiere of the Marvel film Avengers: Endgame.
Here’s what people are saying about Swift and Endgame
This coincidence was immediately pointed out by social media users.
Friday is a popular day for releases, and given the “13” connection, it’s not surprising that this was Swift’s day of choice. Still, that didn’t stop people from making jokes about the situation.
The image that she used to mark the occasion is a little suspect, after all. Though it certainly fits with the sparkly pink aesthetic that has taken over her social media, it is interesting that she used a stone of sorts, given the Endgame connection.
Speaking of “endgame,” in addition to being part of the title of the upcoming Marvel team-up flick, it’s also the name of one of the singles off Swift’s last album, in which she sings, “I wanna be your endgame/I wanna be your first string/I wanna be your A-team…” Could this be a connection? Or could she have music in the film?
One thing is for sure — we won’t know the answer to whether or not these two pop culture events are connected until April 26, so get ready for two weeks of theories from across the internet.
