Taylor Swift Urges Fans to ‘Cancel Plans’ and ‘Truly Isolate’ Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic

Taylor Swift has been speaking out a lot more lately. Now, the 30-year-old pop star is using her influence to speak out about COVI-19 aka Coronavirus. The virus has rapidly become a pandemic, causing many cities to close down schools, restaurants, sporting events, etc. With schools closing and many jobs going remote, people are being urged to practice social distancing. Just yesterday, March 15, 2020, Swift took to her Instagram to encourage her 128 million followers to do just that.

Posting to her Instagram story, Swift expressed her concern that her fans weren’t taking the Coronavirus as seriously as they needed to. She expressed her love for them while also encouraging them to cancel any large gatherings that weren’t essential. Furthermore, she expressed her concerns for people who are at high-risk for Coronavirus e.g. the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with compromised immune systems.

Taylor Swift speaks out about Coronavirus

“Guys – I follow you online and I love you so much and need to express my concern that things aren’t being taken seriously enough right now. I’m seeing lots of get-togethers and hangs and parties still happening. This is the time to cancel plans, actually truly isolate as much as you can, and don’t assume that because you don’t feel sick that you aren’t possibly passing something on to someone elderly or vulnerable to this. It’s a really scary time, but we need to make sacrifices right now,” Swift shared, calling out how her fans were reacting to Coronavirus.

Ariana Grande also expresses concerns about COVI-19

Of course, Swift isn’t the only celebrity who has called out her fans because of their reaction to Coronavirus. Over the weekend, Ariana Grande also expressed her displeasure about how people were reacting to the virus. On Twitter, she stated that saying things like “we’ll be fine because we’re young” is a selfish mindest that failed to show empathy for people who are at high-risk for Coronavirus.

Fans praise the “Cats” star for using her platform to speak about Coronavirus

Critics and fans alike had mixed reactions to Swift speaking out about Coronavirus. Some people were highly supportive of the “The Man” singer using her platform to provide vital information. “All pop stars, actors, artists, etc. with a following need to be doing this. Props to Ariana, T.Swift and anyone else who already has,” one person shared about the situation.

Others reluctantly added that Swift had a lot of influence and could likely be the determining factor for fans deciding to take the Coronavirus situation more seriously. “Like it or not, a lot of people idolize her and she does have pull. If you have that type of influence, you should use it in times like this,” one person wrote. “I mean some people are more willing to listen to their faves rather than health officials. It’s not a surprise that some people took this seriously when it was announced that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson contracted it. It is what it is,” another person chimed in.

Will fans of the “Lover” singer heed her warning?

Whether you’re a fan of Swift or not, we have no doubt that this simple message will cause at least some of her fans to follow her advice. While it’s concerning that people often take celebrities more seriously than health professionals, at least Swift seems to be spreading accurate information. We hope that everyone is taking the proper precautions during this time of uncertainty. Hopefully, we’ll find the necessary vaccine to get Coronavirus under control sooner rather than later.
