Taylor Swift’s Dad Inspired This Scene In ‘Cats’

Cats is headed to theaters on December 20. Already, the previews are taking viewers by storm.

One of the trailers features Taylor Swift’s character Bombalurina, a flirtatious, mischievous kitty, sprinkling catnip all over the Jellicle Ball, an annual celebration for the Jellicle Tribe.

On December 16, Swift told Variety that her dad was actually the person who inspired the use of catnip in the movie.

The popstar told the publication that the conversation about catnip took place during a visit from the film’s director Tom Hooper. He flew to Nashville to show Swift the technology they’d be using to make the actors look like cats (aka “digital fur technology”).

During this meeting Swift’s father, Scott, had the idea that, at some point, the cats in the film should ingest some catnip.

How Taylor Swift’s father influenced ‘Cats’

“It’s an amazing thing. Tom Hooper flew to Nashville to show us the demo of what we would look like as cats, which I still think is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. And you know how we’re going to have tails added and ears that move and whiskers and all that stuff?” said Swift.

She continued: “He comes into the management office and my mom and dad are there, and he’s sitting down with my whole team and he’s doing this demo.”

Apparently, it’s not uncommon for Swift’s father to speak up in her meetings. He’s a “social, friendly man” with “lots of ideas.”

“When I was a kid, I’d have these meetings and I needed a parental chaperone. My dad would always, in the middle of the meeting, have an idea he’d want to tell people about. I’d be like: ‘Dad, Dad stop!’” she shared.

So it was like him to speak up during this Nashville meeting with Hooper.

“And so in the middle of this meeting, Dad just pipes up and says, ‘Hey, I got an idea. What if you had a scene where they are all at the Jellicle Ball and they all get catnipped so they all just start going crazy?’”said Swift.

Until that moment, Hooped didn’t know what catnip was. So it’s a good thing Scott spoke up.

“All of us are like, ‘You don’t know what catnip is?’ We start pulling up all these YouTube videos of cats on catnip,” Swift told the publication.

Hooper loved the idea.

“Tom looks at Dad and goes, ‘That’s going to be in the movie. That’s exactly what we’re going to do.’ So my dad walks around going, ‘Hey, I’m the reason there’s catnip in the scene,’” said Swift.

“For the first time, one of his mid-meeting bursts of inspiration has really turned into something. It’s a really good moment for my dad,” she added.
