When everyone else on earth has moved on, Taylor Swift thought it was time to dredge up super old drama. The Reputation singer kicked off her latest tour by recounting her notorious feud with Kanye and Kim Kardashian West. Aside from an iOS press release that she put on her social media account at the time, Swift has remained silent about the incident that led to her break from the public eye.
Now, though no one really cares, Swift is finally talking about what happened when Kardashian West called her a snake on social media and the fallout afterward.
Let’s go way back
The feud between Kanye West and Taylor Swift began on Sep. 13, 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards. Swift was a rising star and won the Music Video of the Year award for “You Belong to Me.” West was not amused. He felt that the award should have gone to Beyoncé for “Single Ladies” and he leaped on the stage during Swift’s acceptance speech to let the world know how he felt.
It was rude and not at all the College Dropout MC’s best moment, but since then Swift has used the incident to play the victim even though West apologized multiple times afterward.
Next: Making her famous
After 2009 West and Swift seemed to have smoothed things over. However, when the rapper’s 2016 album St. Paublo debuted, all hell broke loose. On his song “Famous,” the Chicago native rapped, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b*tch famous (Godd*mn). I made that b*tch famous.”
Swift was publically outraged by the lyrics and shamed West for using her name in his song. During her acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the 58th Grammys, she said, “As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there-there are going to be people along the way who are going to try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.”

Quick to come to her husband’s defense Kardashian-West clapped back at Swift in an interview with GQ, she said,
“She totally approved that. She totally knew that that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear, my husband gets so much … for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved. What rapper would call a girl that he was rapping a line about to get approval?”
After reading Kardashian-West’s interview, Swift’s team released a statement saying, “Taylor cannot understand why Kanye West, and now Kim Kardashian, will not just leave her alone.”
Next: Audio and video
Whatever you may think about West and his beauty mogul wife, they aren’t liars. Kardashian-West had the receipts to back up what she said about Swift knowing about the lyrics referencing her in “Famous.” Kardashian-West tweeted, “Wait it’s legit National Snake Day?!?!? They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days!” She included a ton of snake emojis in the tweet as well, which would soon be iconic.
The mother of three backed up her tweet with a video of Swift and West on a phone call which shows that the Red singer did, in fact, approve of the “Famous” lyrics. She also used the words “respect” and “friends” a lot.
As soon as the video was released, Swift released an iOS press statement saying, “Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination. I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009.” Swift claimed she never knew about the “b*tch” lyric but the damage was done, she’d obviously lied or at least omitted a great deal of the truth.
Next: Bringing up the past
2 years later
Swift stayed pretty quiet about the whole ordeal after her press release. Now, years later and months after the release of her album, Reputation, where she used the infamous snake emoji to promote it, Swift finally has something to say about being called a snake.
During one of her concerts said she felt “really low” and was concerned about the future of her career after Kardashian-West called her out. She said, “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on. And then a lot of people called me a lot of names on social media. I went through some really low times for a while because of it. I went through sometimes when I didn’t know if I was going to get to do this anymore.”
Next: Up to her old games
Playing the victim
Swift went on to use the moment to address cyberbullying and trolling. She said,
I wanted to send a message to you guys that if someone uses name-calling to bully you on social media, and even if a lot of people jump on board with it, that doesn’t have to beat you. It can strengthen you instead. I learned a really important lesson and that has to do with how much you value your reputation. And I think the lesson is that you shouldn’t care so much if you feel misunderstood by a lot of people who don’t know you, as long as you feel understood by the people who do know you.
Unfortunately, we don’t know how authentic this is because Swift herself has used these tactics during her friends with Katy Perry and her ex- Calvin Harris. She also loves to drag her exes in her song lyrics.

A collective eye-roll
Though her fans will probably stick by her side, the rest of the world, including West and Kardashian-West, have much more pressing concerns. One Twitter user said, “@Taylorswift13 is on her latest attempt to cash in on the #KardashianKash Snake is now a bully word. Comon. No its a person who hides in the shadows and pops out for a meal. ”
Another person cleverly retorted, “I’m tired of her. Everyone has moved on but her.”
Next: Mending fences
While Swift is still whining over feuds of the past, the Kardashian/West clan is trying to rescue Kanye West from the Sunken Place, so we’re sure they won’t even respond to this.
Perhaps Swift will take the high road and makeup with Katy Pery instead of focusing on this. After all, the Roar singer extended an olive branch (literally). Swift tweeted a note Perry sent that said, “Hey Old Friend. I’ve been doing some reflecting on past miscommunications and these feelings between us. I really want to clear the air…”
