Is Taylor Swift Performing at the 2020 American Music Awards?

Musician Taylor Swift‘s 2020 dramatically changed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Instead of embarking on her Lover Tour, she focused on creating and released an album, Folklore. After performing at the Country Music Awards, she could make another award show appearance at the American Music Awards.

Swift is no stranger to the award show. She first performed at the AMAs in 2008, singing “White Horse.” She followed this with performances in 2010, 2012, and 2014. After a larger gap due to her spending the latter half of 2016 out of the spotlight, Swift returned in 2018, where she sang her Reputation track “I Did Something Bad.”

But Swift’s biggest AMAs performance was undoubtedly her most recent one. In 2019, she took the stage for a medley, which began with a visual statement regarding her battle for her master recordings. The performance included songs off her album Lover as well as throwbacks like “Love Story.”

She is nominated at the 2020 event — and she could break a record

At the 2019 event, Swift won Artist of the Decade, along with five other awards. In 2020, she’s nominated for Artist of the Year, where she’s the only woman nominated. She’s also up for Favorite Music Video for “Cardigan,” Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, and Favorite Album – Pop/Rock for Folklore.

Should Swift win Artist of the Year, it would be her third win in that category in a row and her sixth overall. If she wins Favorite Female Artist Pop/Rock, it will also be her third win in a row. No artist has ever done that since Whitney Houston. It would also be her fifth total win in the category, the most of any artist in the award show’s history.

Swift has been silent despite the presidential election results

Though Swift released Folklore in July 2020, she has spent the last several months with a very different focus. Thus far, there has only been one music video for the album, as Swift’s social media posts have been almost entirely to increase voter turnout for the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Swift endorsed Democratic candidate Joe Biden (and his running mate, Kamala Harris) ahead of the election. On November 6, the election was called in favor of the Biden/Harris ticket, making them the president-elect and vice president-elect, respectively. But days passed, and Swift didn’t post on social media.

What song do fans think she will perform?

Swifties were excited to hear/read the artist’s opinions on the election. But perhaps her reason for staying silent was that she wants to say something in person — possibly at the 2020 American Music Awards on November 22. If she takes the stage, will it be only to accept an award, or could it be her third year in a row performing?

While Swift’s involvement hasn’t been announced at the time of publication, let’s speculate on what she could perform. Politically charged songs “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” and “Only the Young” are possible. But her Folklore track, “Exile,” also could be — after all, it has a hashtag emoji on Twitter, indicating something to come.
