What Does Taylor Swift’s New Single ‘Lover’ Reveal About Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn?

As is her way, musical sensation Taylor Swift has released a new song full of Easter eggs. This one sounds like it’s all about her relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn. So what exactly can we glean from the lyrics of the title track, “Lover”?

This is the second album to address Swift and Alwyn’s relationship

Lover is Swift’s seventh album. Her previous album, Reputation, was her first since beginning her relationship with Alwyn. There are a few notable tracks on Reputation that appear to be about him, including “Gorgeous,” and “King of My Heart.” But she also made references to her previous relationships with Calvin Harris (“I Did Something Bad”) and Tom Hiddleston (“Getaway Car”).

With Lover, we have something completely unique. For the first time, Swift has only been in one relationship since the time she began writing the album. And while her first two singles, “Me!” and “You Need to Calm Down” don’t have much to do with Alwyn, her third one certainly does. Let’s dive in.

They’ve been a couple since 2016

Allegedly, Swift met Joe Alwyn at the same place that she met Hiddleston: The 2016 Met Gala (which she attended with Harris — talk about a significant night in her life). From “Gorgeous,” we can deduce that they didn’t begin dating right away, though Swift was clearly into him from the start.

The Met Gala takes place in May, but we know that Swift and Alwyn likely began a relationship at some point in the following months. In fact, we may know the exact date: When Swift covered the Earth, Wind, & Fire song “September” last year, she changed the first line, “Do you remember the 21st night of September?” to “the 28th night of September.”

So many believe that’s the date she and Alwyn became official, meaning their third anniversary is fast approaching. This is corroborated by the “Lover” lyrics: “I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, but I want ‘em all.”

They have a place together

What do most couples do when they’re in a steady relationship for years? They move in together, of course. This tends to be a bit more complicated when you’re in the entertainment industry, as celebrities like Swift and Alwyn spend a lot of their lives on the road.

However, everyone needs a home base. Alwyn’s is in his native London, as it was reported previously that he has a place in Crouch End. Earlier this year, there were rumors that Alwyn and Swift were buying a home together in London, and given the lyrics in “Lover,” they may have been true.

In the first verse, Swift sings, “We could leave the Christmas lights up ’til January / This is our place, we make the rules.” She reiterates this point in the second verse, singing, “We could let our friends crash in the living room / This is our place, we make the call.” Whether that place is in New York or London remains to be seen, but clearly, they’re cohabitating.

They’re headed for marriage

First comes love, then comes… well, living together. But after that? Many have speculated that marriage is on the horizon for these two lovebirds. And now, it appears as though Swift might be confirming that.

In the bridge of “Lover,” she alludes to marriage several times. Swift addresses a crowd, singing “Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?” She says, “I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover” adding “My heart’s been borrowed and yours has been blue / All’s well that ends well to end up with you.” You can practically hear the wedding bells.
