Taylor Swift to Perform at the 2019 VMAs

We can’t calm down — MTV announced that one of the performers at this years’ Video Music Awards would be Taylor Swift. This is not Taylor Swift’s first time appearing at the VMAs. From her “You Belong with Me” performance to Kayne West’s interruption, here’s the artist’s rocky history with the award show.

Taylor Swift performed ‘You Belong with Me’ from the New York City subway

In 2009, Taylor Swift performed at the MTV Video Music Awards with her song “You Belong with Me.” The performance started on a subway platform in New York City. Then, Taylor Swift hopped on a subway and headed to the outside of Radio City Music Hall.

A bunch of fans greeted her as she jumped onto a taxi to finish the song. Thankfully, the beginning was prerecorded because this performance followed Taylor Swift’s rocky acceptance speech for Best Female Video.

Kayne West gave his ‘Imma let you finish, but…” speech

Not everyone was excited when Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video for “You Belong with Me.” When Swift began her acceptance speech, artist Kanye West raced onto the stage and took the microphone from the singer.

“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time,” West said, shrugging before running off the stage. The video he was referring to was Beyoncé’s hit, entitled “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It.)” Some reported that Taylor Swift was seen crying backstage.

Taylor Swift peformed ‘Shake It Off’ at the 2014 VMAs

She’s just going to shake, shake, shake it off. In 2014, Taylor Swift returned to the VMA stage to perform her song, “Shake It Off.” This time, the artist celebrated the release of her album 1989, sporting her iconic red lip. The years following, Taylor Swift earned nominations for songs like “Blank Space” and “Bad Blood.” Her song “Look What You Made Me Do” earned nominations in multiple categories, including “Best Art Direction” and “Best Editing.”

Additionally, Taylor Swift performed her song “Bad Blood” at the 2015 VMAs. That was her last time singing at the Video Music Awards — until now, at least.

Taylor Swift will perform at the 2019 VMAs

Good news for Taylor Swift fans — the artist returns to the VMA stage in August 2019. In addition to her multiple nominations, Taylor Swift will perform live at the award show. It is unclear which song the artist will perform, but some speculate she will perform one of her most recent singles, such as “You Need To Calm Down.

According to a press release, Taylor Swift’s 2019 single, “You Need To Calm Down,” received seven VMAs nominations, making it the artist’s second most nominated song. Her first-most nominated song, “Bad Blood,” received eight nominations.

Other artists nominated at this year’s award ceremony include Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and BTS. The MTV VMAs air live from Prudential Center on Monday, August 26, 2019, at 8 pm ET/PT.
