Taylor Swift Feels Like Tumblr Is the Last Place She ‘Can Still Make a Joke’
Taylor Swift is known for a lot of things. Her insane songwriting skills, her ability to move fluidly through many genres of music, her masterful PR and marketing skills, and her belief in musicians’ rights to name a few. But, one thing that Swift is also known for is her very active presence on Tumblr. While Swift is pretty scarce on Instagram for a celebrity of her magnitude and has confessed that she doesn’t even keep Twitter on her phone, her presence on Tumblr is incredibly steady.
Swift has always been candid about the intense connection that she shares with her fans dubbed Swifties. Fans of the “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” artist follow her every move, often correctly guessing easter eggs clues that she leaves for them which announce new projects. Most recently, some of her fans on Tumblr noticed that she’d been using the number four in her most recent social media posts. Using that information they began working up a theory that Swift’s next single from her most recent album, Lover, will be “The Man.”
Scouting out fans for her secret sessions
But, the love works both ways. Swift has always been extremely interactive with her fans on Tumblr. Not only does she repost their content about her, but she also engages with their personal pages as well. The “You Belong With Me” singer also uses Tumblr as a way to scout out some of her most loyal fans. This helps Swift determine who will be invited to her highly coveted secret sessions, where she invites fans to her various homes, feeds them homemade baked goods, and plays an entire album for them ahead of its release.
Taylor Swift gets candid with Billboard
But just how does Swift maintain such a refreshing relationship with her fans? And why does she choose Tumblr as the platform to continue cultivating these relationships? In a recent interview with Billboard, Swift spoke about the unique nature of the popular media platform. She shared that it somehow felt like part of the Internet where she felt safe to be free and open. “Tumblr is the last place on the internet where I feel like I can still make a joke because it feels small, like a neighborhood rather than an entire continent,” Billboard’s Woman of the Decade confessed.
Why Tumblr feels safe for the Lover artist
Swift then confessed that the community on Tumblr felt very much like a large friend group. Though she has to take it in does at times, she finds it to be an enjoyable way to engage with fans authentically. “We can kid around — they literally drag me. It’s fun. That’s a real comfort zone for me. And just like anything else, I need breaks from it sometimes. But when I do participate in that space, it’s always in a very inside-joke, friend vibe,” the Cats actress added.
Swift gets overwhelmed by Twitter
Finally, Swift shared how other platforms are far more chaotic for her to experience in large amounts. “Sometimes, when I open Twitter, I get so overwhelmed that I just immediately close it. I haven’t had Twitter on my phone in a while because I don’t like to have too much news. Like, I follow politics, and that’s it. But I don’t like to follow who has broken up with who, or who wore an interesting pair of shoes. There’s only so much bandwidth my brain can really have,” she shared. It’s great that Swift still has a safe place on the Internet when she can comfortably be herself. We’re sure that her fans appreciate her Tumblr presence more than she knows.
