Ted Bundy Movies to Watch Before the New Amazon Docuseries on the Notorious Serial Killer

People can’t get enough of serial killers. Whether we’re binge-watching shows like Mindhunter and Criminal Minds, re-watching classic movies like Silence of the Lambs or Psycho, or just have our televisions permanently tuned to Investigation Discovery, there’s no denying our morbid fascination with those who kill compulsively.

Some of these terrifying criminals seem to have a particular hold on the popular imagination, even long after they’ve committed their acts of violence. Ted Bundy, who murdered at least 30 women in the 1970s, was executed in 1989. But new movies and documentaries about his horrifying crimes keep coming, including a new docuseries from Amazon, Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer.

New Amazon series will focus on Ted Bundy’s one-time girlfriend

The five-part Amazon series will focus on Bundy’s one-time girlfriend Elizabeth Kendall. It will feature interviews with Kendall — who wrote a 1981 memoir called The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy — and her daughter Molly. The series will also include conversations with survivors of Bundy’s attacks, some of whom are speaking out for the first time.

Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer will look at the “disturbing and profound way in which Bundy’s pathological hatred of women collided with the culture wars and feminist movement of the 1970s, culminating in what is perhaps the most infamous true-crime saga of our time,” according to Amazon.

The series is coming to Amazon in 2020; a specific release date has not been announced.

Other Ted Bundy movies and documentaries to watch

Amazon’s take on the Ted Bundy story won’t arrive until next year, but if you are interested in learning more about the infamous serial killer, there are plenty of other movies and documentaries to add to your watch list.

The 2018 Netflix film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is also based on Kendall’s memoir. Zac Efron plays Bundy and Lily Collins is Elizabeth Kendall. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews but generally praised Efron’s performance as the killer.

Also on Netflix is Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. This four-episode series features interviews and archival footage of Bundy as well as interviews with family, friends, and surviving victims.

The 2003 made-for-TV movie The Stranger Beside Me is based on Ann Rule’s true-crime book of the same name. Rule, a former police officer turned crime writer, became friends with Bundy when they were both volunteering with a suicide crisis hotline in the early 1970s. As she was covering a series of unsolved murders of young women in the Pacific Northwest, she began to suspect her friend might be the killer. The movie is streaming on Amazon Prime.

Two other feature films about Bundy are also on Amazon. Ted Bundy with Michael Reilly Burke is streaming for free with Amazon Prime. Bundy: A Legacy of Evil with Corin Nemec is available to rent or buy.

Ted Bundy: Mind of a Monster is an Investigation Discovery special that aired earlier this year. It’s streaming for free on the network’s website. You can also watch 20/20’s 2019 episode on Bundy on the ABC News YouTube channel or on Hulu.

NCIS star Mark Harmon played Bundy in the 1986 TV movie The Deliberate Stranger. It’s not streaming, but it is available on DVD
