‘Teen Mom OG’: A Conviction for Amber Portwood Could Spell Doom For her MTV Career

Amber Portwood’s recent legal trouble has landed her in a ton of hot water. Her relationship seems all but dead and buried, and it looks like her MTV career might be headed that way, too. At least, the production house behind Teen Mom OG is weighing its options. According to TMZ, the franchise will likely part ways with the troubled mom if all of her charges end in convictions. If that does happen, Teen Mom OG will be the least of Portwood’s worries though; she could face a pretty hefty jail stint to boot.

Will MTV cut ties with Amber Portwood?

MTV and the production crew behind Teen Mom OG and Teen Mom 2 has made it a habit to stand by its talent. Jenelle Evans, for example, had several run-ins with the law before she was finally axed from the network. The same is true for Portwood, but it looks like the TV personality has run out of runway with the company.

TMZ is reporting that the production team behind the show is willing to let Portwood’s court battle play out before they make a final decision, but they will cut ties if the legal process ends in a conviction. The production team is allegedly focused on one charge in particular; the felony linked to the use of a deadly weapon. According to reports, Portwood wielded a machete during a heated argument with her live-in boyfriend, Andrew Glennon. Portwood’s one-year-old son was in the home during the incident.

What kind of jail time is Amber Portwood facing?

Portwood was arrested in the early morning hours of July 5. According to Radar Online, she was released from jail on a $2,000 bond provided by a friend. From there the mother of two was sent off but ordered to appear back in court. She did just that, showing up at a local courthouse with a posse of support. Even Gary Shirley showed up to support his ex-fiancé.

Portwood’s first court hearing ended in a continuance, which is, apparently standard protocol. She is facing three felony charges. The charges include domestic battery, criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, and domestic battery committed in the presence of a child under 16, according to Pop Culture.

The charges against Portwood are no joke, and each carries a prison sentence of between six months and two and a half years. Portwood’s history of domestic violence also doesn’t bode well for her chances of staying out of prison. She was arrested for domestic battery in December 2010 after she attacked her then-fiancé.

The troubled TV personality later went on to serve a 17-month prison sentence for drug charges. Portwood has since informed that public that she is living with both bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Will Portwood’s spot be filled by another teen mom?

Portwood getting axed is a definite possibility, but what the production house will do about filing her spot remains unknown. Since the team behind Teen Mom OG hasn’t made a statement about Portwood’s future with the franchise, no one can say for sure if they’ll leave her spot vacant or just let another teen mom fill it for any forthcoming seasons.

Portwood’s arrest might be fortuitous for one person, though. Mackenzie McKee, who appeared on the now-defunct Teen Mom 3, has joined the cast as a guest for Season 9. It’s possible that, if all goes well, McKee could potentially slide right into Portwood’s role.

McKee also brings the drama, but not the kind that Portwood or her Teen Mom 2 counterpart, Jenelle Evans, brings to the table. McKee has had some social media outbursts, trouble with her baby daddy tuned husband, and even an animal cruelty investigation levied against her in recent years. She might not get arrested, but she could liven up the Teen Mom OG cast, most of whom seem to have grown into somewhat stable adults.
