Confirmed: Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie Will Be in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
Marvel loves to surprise fans, as well as reveal bits of information over time leading up to a film’s release. Avengers: Endgame, which comes out on April 26, 2019, has been no different. We’ve just learned that a character who has been absent from the promotional materials will, in fact, be in the movie after all. Here’s what we just learned about Tessa Thompson’s role as Valkyrie in Endgame.
Valkyrie first appeared in Thor: Ragnarok
Thompson’s character, Valkyrie, was introduced in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. For those who may have forgotten, a refresher: Valkyrie is not technically her name. Rather, the character was a Valkyrior, the name given to the legendary female warriors of Asgard. However, when she encounters Thor, she is simply known as Scrapper 142, who makes her living collection participants for the Grandmaster on Sakaar.
Though she insists that she is a lone wolf, Valkyrie joins “the Revengers,” teaming up with Thor, Loki, and Hulk to take on Hela. In the final scene of the film, she is seen on the ship, leaving the ruins of Asgard, very much alive. However, she isn’t in the opening scene in Avengers: Infinity War, in which Thanos and his lieutenants destroy the ship. So many fans were worried that her character was killed off and — even worse — not given a proper end.
Here’s why we thought she would appear
There have been plenty of signs that Valkyrie will be in Endgame, as noted by Inverse. One is a comment from one of the directors, Joe Russo (more on that to come). Another is from Thompson herself, whose Jan. 2019 tweet about the Times Up and 4 percent movements in Hollywood insinuated that she would appear.
Thompson confirmed her part in the film on Instagram
All fears have been assuaged. On March 26, 2019, exactly one month until Endgame’s release, a new crop of character posters was released. The posters each feature one Avengers, with the tagline “Avenge the Fallen.” What’s more, there are images for both those who are alive and those who vanished in The Decimation, the latter featuring the character in question in black-and-white.
Each actor shared their character’s poster on social media, and happily, Thompson was among them. What’s more, she is in color: Meaning that she is still alive, and will be a part of the team that works to fix what Thanos did.
Where has Valkyrie been?
This is the big question. Valkyrie wasn’t in the Infinity War at all. In fact, she was never mentioned. It’s assumed that there were no survivors when Thanos destroyed the ship — however, we know that’s not entirely true, as Thor lives, thanks to his crash-landing on the Guardians’ ship.
So what happened to Valkyrie? Did she also manage to coincidentally land on the ship of someone who could help her? We know the Guardians received a distress call — it’s possible that another crew, like the ones we saw at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, rescued Valkyrie. According to Joe Russo, however, she likely got out in an escape pod prior to Thanos’ arrival on the ship.
What part will Valkyrie play in Avengers: Endgame?
This is the greatest question of all. Though we haven’t seen her in the trailers, we know this doesn’t mean anything as far as Marvel is concerned: The trailers for Infinity War were doctored to show things like Hulk in Wakanda, when in fact Banner was in a Hulk-sized suit during this time, and wasn’t green at all. So it’s very possible that the scenes we’ve seen so far were altered or shown from an angle that doesn’t show the character. Whatever the case, it’s going to be exciting to see what this badass warrior can do to help the Avengers.
