The 1 Reason Ivanka Trump’s Photo With Her Son Sparked Controversy

As the first daughter of the United States, Ivanka Trump regularly finds herself in the middle of controversy. Her social media presence is often to blame, where she’s made more mistakes than we can count.

This time, however, she’s left people positively outraged. Check out the photo (page 4) and learn why this is her biggest social media mistake yet (page 5), as well as the celebrities who are voicing their distaste for her ‘tone deaf’ post (page 8).

1. Trump has made oblivious social media mistakes in the past

Though Trump has now sparked serious outrage, it isn’t the first time she’s received backlash on social media. Back in September 2017, she shared this photo with a caption that read, “Cuddling my little nephew Luke… the best part of an otherwise incredible day!”

Although her misuse of the word “otherwise” was more of a silly mistake, it made her come across as completely oblivious. Chrissy Teigen was one of the many celebrities who called her out, tweeting in response, “‘Otherwise’ implies you did not like hangin with this baby.”

2. She (accidentally) shared this negative headline about her father’s presidency

When Trump’s father won the 2016 presidential election, she was quick to boast on social media. She shared a photo of The New York Times to Instagram, which featured the headline, “Democrats, Students and Foreign Allies Face the Reality of a Trump Presidency.”

She captioned the post, “Thank you America!” — seemingly failing to realize the headline was far from congratulatory of a Trump win. One user commented, “This is a negative headline, Ivanka what the hell are you doing?”

3. She posted a glamorous photo the night of the Muslim ban

On the night President Trump signed an executive order to keep Muslims from seven Middle Eastern countries out of the United States, his daughter found it an appropriate time to post a glamorous photo.

She and her husband, Jared Kushner, attended the annual black-tie Alfalfa Club dinner on Jan. 28, 2017. One Twitter user critiqued, “Glad the first daughter is enjoying her night out on the town as our country betrays everything it stands for.”

4. Trump posted this photo of herself with her son

On May 27, 2018. Trump posted this loving photo with her youngest son, Theodore. She simply captioned the photo, “My [heart]! #SundayMorning” with the two gazing into each other’s eyes.

This photo may seem innocent, but it’s caused Trump to become the center of controversy yet again. It wasn’t just the photo itself, however, that caused the backlash — the timing of the post sent a message that has made people furious.

Trump’s photo with her son was posted while children across America are being ripped away from their parents. A federal government policy has ruled the separation of children from their parents who are undocumented migrants in America.

While the government is supposed to be placing these children in foster homes, Steven Wagner, a senior official in the Department of Health and Human Services, revealed that this hasn’t been the case. According to Yahoo, he told a congressional committee that “the government was ‘unable to determine with certainty the whereabouts of 1,475’ minors after attempting to contact their sponsors in the last three months of 2017.”

The timing of Trump’s post with her son has been deemed completely “tone deaf.” Brian Klaas, a political scientist at the London School of Economics, criticized, “This is so unbelievably tone deaf, given that public outrage is growing over young kids being forcibly ripped from the arms of their parents at the border.”

He added, “[It is] a barbaric policy that Ivanka Trump is complicit in supporting.” As a mother to her three children, Arabella, Joseph, and Theodore, you’d think Trump would finally come to her senses in speaking out against this policy.

Twitter users have been demanding answers on the whereabouts of the 1,475 children who are lost after being separated from their parents.

Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro wrote, “When I think about the 1500 lost children and those who are systematically separated from their mothers at the border, I come back to the same thought: If we can’t stop this in America we won’t stop it anywhere. #WhereAreTheChildren.”

Another Twitter user attested, “A kid is a kid even if they were born in another country. Don’t let their humanity be diminished and our moral responsibility as adults be lessened based on where they came from.  #WhereAreTheChildren.”

Many celebrities have voiced their outrage toward Trump on Twitter, as well. Comedian Patton Oswalt wrote, “Isn’t it the just the best to snuggle your little one — knowing exactly where they are, safe in your arms? It’s the best. The BEST. Right, Ivanka? Right?”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Chelsea Peretti also criticized, “Truly hurtful timing where is your heart and #WhereAreTheChildren.”
