In the early 1990s, the British girl pop group, the Spice Girls took the world by storm. The ladies included Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Horner formally Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). They stepped onto the scene with their 1996 hit single, “Wannabe.” However, by the 2000s, the ladies had disbanded to raise families and focus on new professions or solo careers.
Still, despite their quick rise and departure from the celeb scene, the Spice Girls have been beloved for over two decades for their focus on feminism, fashion, girl power, and the fan-favorite movie, Spice World. Over the years, the ladies have reunited at one point or another, but often, Beckham aka Posh Spice was absent from their reunions.
Now, the legendary businesswoman has decided to reconnect with her old crew for a 2018 Spice Girls reunion.
The Spice Girls reunion will certainly come as a shock to many fans, especially on the heels of GEM: Brown, Horner and Burton’s 2016 trio. The three ladies came together to honor the 20th anniversary of their hit single “Wannabe.”
At the time, Beckham declined to participate choosing instead to focus on her fashion empire. Though she did wish her former bandmates luck, she told the Sunday Times, “I do think they should sing their own material though, because what we did in the Spice Girls was so special. If they sang Spice Girls songs, I think I might be a bit sad.”
At the time, Chisholm also declined to participate. She said, “I just didn’t feel like it was right and so if everyone was feeling it at some point, I’m not against the idea…But I think it would have to be all five really.”
The last time the Spice Girls all performed together was at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. After that performance, Horner really tried to get the ladies to reunite for good. She told Red Magazine, “I really pushed to get everyone back together. It got to the point where I just had to let it go. I still love the girls and there are other bits and bobs in the pipeline.”
As recently as a few months ago, Chisholm also didn’t see any hope for a reunion. She told the press that there were no plans “in the pipeline” for a Spice Girls reunion.
Mel C’s campaign
It looks like the 2018 Spice Girls reunion was the handiwork of Chisholm. In October, the singer released her music video “Room for Love” where Horner, Bunton, and Beckham appeared. Brown’s noticeable absence certainly raised some eyebrows. The singer told the press that it was a “shame” that the other Mel could not appear.
At the time, Brown was going through a bitter divorce and mourning the death of her father. Chisholm explained,
I don’t want it to look negative because it’s not, it’s not a big deal, I reached out to lots of other people, and everyone’s busy. She didn’t get round to doing it, and obviously, it does concern me…I think people will pick up on that but I don’t want anything to be made of it. Having four of the Spice Girls in it is really special. Geri’s in there briefly, Emma’s done a really lovely one and last but not least Victoria Beckham found time to do a little one for me.
Despite Brown’s absence in Chisholm’s video, it looks like the ladies have been in secret talks and negotiations all summer about their 2018 reunion.
The Sun is reporting, “The five of them have been locked in secret talks since the summer, and finally they are all on-board for a 2018 reunion. As it stands, they will be working together on a series of projects, which will include an album and a TV special celebrating the Spice Girls.”
Don't let anyone EVER break your soul down disrespect you and laugh behind your back, stand strong on your own 2 feet like the goddess you are, there are people out there unfortunately that lie and would love to see you fail and will do anything in there power to make sure it happens, never give them the satisfaction of doing so,stay strong in your truth and stay real and passionate in your heart and soul, coz nothing NOTHING can break that inside you, that's you that's your strength god gave you, just hold your head up high breath and let karma do all the work, trust and believe she will!!! #stopdomesticviolence #stopmentalabuse #stopgaslighting #stophumantrafficking #stopdaterapedrugging
Over the past year, several members of the Spice Girls have experienced numerous life changes. In the midst of the loss of her father, Brown has had to watch her messy divorce play out in front of the media. Also, Horner recently gave birth to a son, Monty. With everything that is going on, the ladies were driven back together to support one another.
A source told The Sun, “Things between them were quite icy at the start of the year. But gradually the ice thawed, and Mel was the one who drove that. Mel’s divorce battle also helped to bring them back together, as did the birth of Geri’s son.”
Getting Posh onboard
After exiting the Spice Girls for her solo career, starting her fashion empire, Victoria Beckham, and marrying and starting a family with soccer superstar David Beckham, Beckham has always been reluctant to give into the nostalgia of the Spice Girls. However, it looks like the 43-year-old has changed her tune in the recent months after spending time with her old friends.
According to The Sun, “Getting Victoria to agree has been a coup for everyone involved, given she has always been the person holding back on a reunion. The fact she is on board now is down to how much closer the five of them have become recently.”
Though it looks like we will see the Spice Girls together again in 2018, nothing is set in stone just yet. The ladies have reunited with their former boss Simon Fuller, but an insider says,
Plans at the moment are still in the early stages, and everything involving the girls tends to be complicated because they are so busy. It is not easy to get them all in the same place at the same time. But the team behind the reunion are delighted to have made it to this point.
