America’s Got Talent has been on the air for fourteen successful seasons. Though following in the footsteps of shows like American Idol and The Voice, the series opened its arms to amateur acts outside the singing and dancing worlds.
From magicians and trapeze artists to ventriloquists and stand-up comedians, America’s Got Talent has seen its fair share of stellar competitors, and a handful of varying coaches and hosts. Just like the show is a rotating door for contestants, the same can be said for some of the castmates: the likes of Nick Cannon, Tyra Banks, Sharon Osbourne, and Howard Stern have all since come and gone.
With Howard Stern no longer serving as a judge on America’s Got Talent, fans have received Simon Cowell in his place. Though Cowell is the Executive Producer behind the series, let’s just say, he may not be a fan-favorite, as some fans wish he remained behind the scenes following Stern’s exit.
Ever since Simon Cowell joined the show as a judge, fans argue that the dynamic between the coaches has shifted, and the previous harmonious balance of energies has been amiss. However, fans have one complaint concerning Cowell that stands above the others.
What fans hate most about Simon Cowell on ‘America’s Got Talent’
When browsing through discussions concerning Simon Cowell’s presence on America’s Got Talent, one trend quickly emerges: Simon Cowell has too much power and control over the show. One fan took to Reddit, starting a conversation with the following commentary:
Simon is always the last judge to vote in the judges pick section, so he can force a tie and “send it to America” or he can make the choice personally. He can stop any singing act he wants and demand another song, and then pretend the 2nd song is infinitely better. He decides who gets to be on the show in the first place. He recruits from other countries talent shows. He recruits from other shows in general…Reddit User
Fans argue the other coaches on the show might as well not exist
Many America’s Got Talent fans are in concurrence with the above statement regarding Simon Cowell, as he minimizes the other coaches’ relevance, taking away their importance to the show’s results. Fans argued:
He literally is the executive producer and creator of the show. You could literally rename the show, “Simon Cowell Picks Who’s Got Talent”, and it would be basically the same judge. Wish they’d try going back to 3 judges again, that was so good.Reddit User
He also holds power over the viewing audience. The other judges might as well be made out of cardboard and have tiny voiceboxes with a singular button glued to their chest each week that could be pressed when they had to say anything…Reddit User
In short, America’s Got Talent may be in danger of losing viewers if the showrunners don’t change Simon Cowell’s shtick soon. However, considering Simon Cowell is a producer on the show, it’s unlikely that he will minimize his own relevance. However, only the future will tell what’s in store for America’s Got Talent — The Simon Cowell Show.
