The 1 Thing That Made Mariah Carey Decide to Get Weight Loss Surgery

Mariah Carey showed off her slimmer figure during her hand and footprint ceremony in Hollywood on Nov. 1, 2017. Reports later surfaced that the reason for her weight loss was a sleeve gastrectomy, a procedure in which part of the stomach is surgically removed to give the shape of a tube or sleeve.

Since Carey has embraced her curves many times in the past, some of her fans have been wondering what made her decide to get the surgery now.

Here’s what we know about why the diva opted for surgery and the main reason she took this step.

Her ex-fiancé had good results with the procedure

One of the reasons Carey may have considered getting weight loss surgery in the first place is because of the results her ex-fiancé, James Packer. Per the Daily Mail, Packer underwent the procedure in 2011.

According to a 2015 report, Carey might have started toying with the idea after hearing Packer boast about it. “The singer’s size has been steadily increasing over the years – and it was her billionaire boyfriend who put the idea in her ear since he himself lost more than 75 pounds from the procedure in 2011,” an insider said.

Her weight went back up after losing 70 pounds

After the birth of her twins in 2011, Carey did lose 70 pounds on the Jenny Craig diet plan. She then spoke to Entertainment Tonight in 2016 about another diet she was following.

However, some reports have suggested that her weight had “skyrocketed” since then and the gastric sleeve surgery was a more permanent option for her to shed the pounds.

It got more difficult to do some dance routines

According to Page Six, Carey’s weight was affecting her routines during live shows as some of her dances had become more difficult for her to do.

“Mariah has always been proud of her curves, but this summer, as her Caesars Palace residency came to a close, and then she went on tour with Lionel Richie, she noticed it became harder to dance,” a source told the publication.

She became more self-conscious

Something else that could have led to Carey’s ultimate decision to have the procedure is that she may have gotten self-conscious about her weight.

“She always fluctuates and it makes her upset but it’s hard for her to manage,” an insider close to the star told ET.

A victim of constant body shaming

Several publications have reported that the real reason Carey had the gastric sleeve surgery is that she was a victim of constant body shaming from internet trolls.

Page Six’s source revealed that the songstress was planning on trying to lose weight via exercise and dieting again, but then she started “getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers.”

The cruel comments shaming her size pushed her to do the procedure in October 2017.

New residency in Las Vegas?

There could be one other deciding factor in Carey’s choice to have the surgery, and that may have to do with a brand new residency in Las Vegas.

Following her successful residency at Caesars Palace, sources say the songbird inked a two-year deal to do another residency at the nearby Venetian. The Venetian Las Vegas has not confirmed the news about Carey’s possible residency, but said in a statement it is “consistently engaged in discussions with a number of today’s top artists regarding residencies, and we are always interested in having artists of the caliber of Mariah Carey perform at our venues.”

Happier and healthier after surgery

What matters more than the reasons Carey got the surgery is how she feels about the results. The “We Belong Together” singer is reportedly very happy and has been feeling good.

“She is already seeing some good results, and she feels a lot better,” a source told Page Six.
