The 3 Avengers Fans Would Most Hate to See Die in ‘Avengers: Endgame’

As the hype surrounding Avengers: Endgame builds with each step the cast members take along their press junket, diehard fans can’t help but watch each interview. They’re hoping for the smallest insight into Endgame, listening to glean a piece of information regarding the fallout of events (although not one cast member has received the entire script, so they say).

While the excitement builds, a bittersweet sense of reflection also sets in, as fans realize that this is the “endgame;” meaning, for at least one character in the OG 6 – Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye – this movie will mark the end of their journey.

Someone has to die to make the stakes feel real. So, who are the heroes fans can’t bear to lose? This list will attempt to highlight the three characters that will have viewers crying like babies if their time comes to an end. The list is based on viewers’ connections to the characters, what their deaths would imply for other MCU heroes, as well as the frequency of mentions in digital publications, forums, and social media outlets.

*spoiler alert (if one of the below theories turns out to be true)*

3) Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson)

It is widely known that Scarlett Johansson will star in a Black Widow standalone film following Avengers: Endgame; however, if the film is an origin tale, she can still die in the upcoming installment without destroying the epic MCU interconnected timeline.

Fans of the Avengers have watched Black Widow grow from Tony Stark’s assistant with a skillset into a strong and independent heroine. Over the last few films, she has been coming to terms with her identity, as well as her “gray moral compass,” as Johansson herself stated in an interview.  Losing Black Widow amidst her strides in terms of her narrative arc and complex characterization would feel unfair.

Not to mention, if fans have to watch Black Widow die as the Hulk looks over at her from across the landscape, they will fail to see the screen due to the tears welling in their eyes. The Russo Brothers just can’t do this to us.

2) Captain America / Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)

While it has been widely prophecized that Steve Rogers will die in the upcoming movie – as Evans has made it clear that he will not be returning to the MCU – this does not mean his death will be any less challenging to handle.

Because Joe and Anthony Russo are well aware of the widespread assumption surrounding Captain America’s fate, it’s more than possible that they’ve determined a different way to write the character out of the Universe. The writers have said that there’s no way people are going to guess this one.

Steve Rogers is the righteous soldier who defends those who cannot protect themselves. His heart is always in the right place and, if he dies, it’s likely going to be in some unbearably heroic fashion, such as saving another Avenger. In a jump-in-front-of-a bullet manner, Evans cannot simply die. He would have to die in the most characterizing way possible, which would tear fans apart.

1) Iron Man / Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

Should we pretend like this isn’t even a possibility? That seems like the best way to protect our emotions, right? Tony Stark has to appear in more Spiderman movies, so he simply cannot die. It’s that simple. Unfortunately, fans have to accept that Tony Stark may cease to exist at the end of Endgame.

Part of the journey is the end.

While this may be the hardest hit to take, how beautiful to think that the man who started it all would end his journey with Endgame? Robert Downey Jr. got into the Iron Man suit and proceeded to catalyze an international phenomenon. While characters and actors are not the same, many would agree that Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr. feel a bit more fused than the other Avengers. For, together, they started what we have come to recognize as the MCU.

On a side note, if Tony Stark has to bring back Peter Parker just for Peter Parker to watch Tony die…Let’s not even go there.
