The 3 Best Movies in Theaters Right Now: ‘Triple 9’ and More

Each week, our staff takes a look at every movie set to be released. This week’s bunch includes the latest from Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul, the inspiring true story of an Olympic athlete, and a release that’s been the subject of both praise and criticism in the midst of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Here are our top picks for your weekend of movie-going.

1. Triple 9

The police drama genre is one that’s been done to death in Hollywood, making it that much more refreshing to see a different take. Triple 9 gives us just that, diving headfirst into the world of violence, moral ambiguity, and crooked cops. It’s already getting a fair amount of good press from critics, evidenced by a solid 60% Rotten Tomatoes score. Combine that with an A-list cast featuring Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackie, Kate Winslet, and Woody Harrelson, and you have a movie deserving of the weekend’s top spot.

2. Eddie the Eagle

Coming in at No. 2 on our list for this weekend is a movie that’s decidedly more upbeat than the R-rated violence of Triple 9. Eddie the Eagle tells the inspiring true story of Great Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper, played by Kingsman star Taron Egerton. It’s your classic underdog tale, already holding down a lofty 73% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most critics seem to agree that it’s a perfectly entertaining, albeit predictable, sports story, buoyed by its arrival right before the blockbuster season kicks off in earnest in late-winter/early-spring.

3. Gods of Egypt

It only seems appropriate that Gods of Egypt debuts two days before the controversially white-washed Oscars. The movie has been subject to a fair amount of criticism, making especial note of a white cast depicting Egyptian deities. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau countered the controversy in a recent interview with The Red Bulletinpointing out, “I’m not even playing an Egyptian; I’m an 8-foot-tall god who turns into a falcon.” Whatever your thoughts are on the matter, it still promises to be an entertaining spectacle.
