The 3 X-Men to Be at the Center of the MCU’s Mutant Saga
With the Fox/Disney merger becoming a cinematic breakthrough of the past, it’s only a matter of time until mutantkind makes its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For two decades, Fox’s former franchise featured films about Magneto’s Brotherhood and Charles Xavier’s X-Men at the center. Thus, Kevin Feige will have to reinvent the wheel to avoid imitation. However, he also has to ensure that the MCU material remains close enough to the source while delivering on fan expectations. So, what’s the plan?
Based on available information and insider leaks, it looks like three x-men will become the MCU’s foundation for mutantkind — serving to introduce other characters that Fox underutilized. Based on the sheer amount of movies with Wolverine, Magneto, and Xavier at the forefront, it goes without saying that the Fox films built narratives around these three individuals. They were Fox’s ticket sellers. Yet, while one of them may remain at the center, it looks like the other two may take a backseat under Disney’s umbrella. Storm, Mystique, and Professor X may become the three most vital ingredients.
1. Storm to lead the X-Men
According to recent reports, Marvel is looking to cast Janelle Monáe as Storm in Black Panther 2. Thus, Storm may be one of the first mutants to appear in the landscape, serving to introduce the X-Men via a romantic entanglement with T’Challa. In the comics, Ororo Munroe and T’Challa go on to marry, have children, and divorce. So, her introduction could be the start of a lengthy relationship narrative.
If Storm joins early on, Marvel may choose to start the X-Men journey later in time than Fox did. Meaning, Storm may be the headmaster of either Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters or the later Jean Grey School of Higher Learning.
Storm is a leader in the comics, and one of Xavier’s most-trusted confidantes. Thus, placing her at the center would be canonical, while still highlighting a different trajectory in X-Men history (one where Xavier’s prior existence is implied or referenced via a different timeline). This brings us to Xavier (and his possible introduction in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
2. Xavier could join the MCU in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ (in an alternate timeline)
Rumor has it that Doctor Strange will begin to form The Illuminati in his second solo outing. The team will be asked to combat powerful intergalactic threats the Avengers are not suited to address.
One of the members who will apparently appear in the movie: Professor X. Yet, considering this is the “multiverse of madness,” the team may be fighting in an alternate timeline – a concurring universe happening alongside the present MCU one — which would allow both Storm and Professor X to be focal simultaneously. This approach would give fans both an original and familiar experience at the same time: the best of both worlds. Who other than Marvel would find a way to have its cake and eat it too?
3. Mystique (via Rogue) could lead the Brotherhood of Mutants
Rogue will reportedly appear as an adversary in Captain Marvel 2. Insider reports note that Rogue will appear as a threat — a member of the mutant terrorist group. In the comics, Rogue comes to absorb Captain Marvel’s powers after Mystique, via a prophecy, discovers that Captain Marvel will try to kill her daughter, Rogue. Thus, fans are likely to witness a different Brotherhood of Mutants under Disney.
Fans will likely receive the Brotherhood Mystique comes to lead — including Pyro, the Blob, Avalanche, Rogue, and Destiny. Rogue will then, eventually, abandon the team to join the X-Men.
