The 5 Most Streamed Music Artists of 2015
2015 is quickly coming to a close, and ahead of the end of the year, Spotify is looking back at which of the many artists in their repertoire proved to be most popular over the last 12 months. The music streaming company has just released it’s annual Year in Music list, revealing which of music’s biggest names garnered the most listens on Spotify this year.
There were several notable findings. Rihanna was the year’s most streamed female performer with 1 billion streams, while Major Lazer’s ubiquitous hit, “Lean On,” was the most streamed song of the year with 540 million streams. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber has the record for most streams in a day with 36 million streams.
But of the many popular artists with music on Spotify, five names dominated above the rest. Below, check out the world’s top five most streamed artists of 2015.
5. Kanye West
The rapper came in at No. 5 on Spotify’s rankings of the most streamed artists of the year worldwide. Though West didn’t actually release any new music this year, his popularity on the streaming service has stayed strong — perhaps because fans are just trying to bide their time until the release of the artist’s widely hyped upcoming fifth album, which is currently titled Swish.
4. Maroon 5
The pop rock group comes in as the fourth most globally streamed artist of the year. Though the band didn’t debut any new music in 2015, it did see a notable release with Sugar, the third single from the album V, which came in at No 2. on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In September, Maroon 5 also dropped its first ever greatest hits album, Singles.
3. The Weeknd
Coming in as the third most streamed artist of the year worldwide is Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd. The singer has had a banner year, with the release of his second full-length studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness. In addition to marking the artist’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, the dark pop record is also Spotify’s most-streamed album of the year globally (beating both Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and Major Lazer’s Peace Is The Mission).
2. Ed Sheeran
Though Sheeran may have been usurped for the top spot this year, he’s still proving to be extremely popular among Spotify streamers. The singer came in just behind Drake, becoming the second most globally streamed artist of the year. With more than 3 billion total streams to his name to date, he also maintained his reign as Spotify’s most streamed artist of all time.
Spotify users clearly can’t get enough of Drake. The rapper topped the company’s Year in Music list, earning the title of the most globally streamed artist of 2015. The artist garnered a whopping 1.8 billion streams this year, putting him well ahead of the 860 million streams garnered by last year’s winner, Sheeran. It should come as no surprise that Drake earned the top spot on the ranking, considering he released two much-buzzed about new compilations this year: his surprise album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, and his joint mix-tape with Future, What a Time to Be Alive.
