‘The Americans’: What’s Coming Next in Season 4?
The Americans will kick off its highly anticipated fourth season this month. Ahead of the premiere, the show’s stars, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, and producers are revealing new details about what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes. Here’s what’s coming next in the critically acclaimed FX series.
1. It will pick up in 1983
It’s taken three seasons to move through the beginning of the ’80s, and when The Americans returns for Season 4, it will be the year 1983. As producers recently revealed, the upcoming season will highlight several of the year’s big historical moments — including President Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars Speech, David Copperfield making the Statue of Liberty disappear, and the debut of the landmark TV movie, The Day After.
2. It will deal with the repercussions of Paige’s discovery
One of last season’s biggest bombshells came when the Jennings’ teenage daughter Paige finally uncovered her parents’ true identities as Russian spies. The discovery complicates the family dynamics on multiple levels and makes her recruitment into the Second Generation Illegals program much less important.
“The game has certainly shifted in terms of parenting Paige,” executive producer Joel Fields said. “The question of focusing on her recruitment is secondary to how to manage this family’s survival.”
“This season feels a lot, to me, about the emotional cost … of the choices over the last three years that they’ve [made],” star Keri Russell added. “There is a big opening for Elizabeth in a new way, especially with Paige and seeing how it’s affecting her … Between Paige’s fractures and Philip’s fractures, there is a bigger sensitivity to the fragility of her family this season.”
3. This season will focus on the danger of bio-weapons
In addition to dealing with Paige’s discovery, the Jennings will be facing another major danger. As Fields also revealed, the upcoming Season 4 will place an emphasis on “bio-weapons and the danger of them getting out and killing everyone on the planet,” he said. “For both of them, the danger of those bio-weapons is going to loom very large.”
4. Elizabeth will face new emotional turmoil
Elizabeth will be running a new, “longer operation that is going to challenge her in new and even more difficult ways,” Fields teased.
Russell also discussed her character’s upcoming challenges, stating, “The interesting thing for me is about opening Elizabeth’s perspective and the emotional cost these choices have had over the past three seasons.”
5. Season 4 won’t be the show’s last
When asked when the FX series will conclude, Fields said he didn’t have a definite answer, but that he envisions the show as a three-act story. With that metaphor in mind, Fields says he thinks of Season 4 as “the end of the second act.”
As for how many seasons the purported third act will consist of, Fields says the show will do whatever is right for the storytelling. “Whether it takes a fifth season — or a fifth and sixth season — to tell the rest of that story, we’ll discover that as we dig out of this season,” he said. “We have the support from the network to do what’s right for the show and make those choices based on what’s important for the story and what we want to do creatively.”
The Americans returns for a fourth season on FX on March 16.
