Chris Harrison (and every promotional tool The Bachelor‘s put out in the last month) has told us to “expect turbulence,” so fans are ready for some good ol’ fashioned reality TV drama.

Peter Weber’s ‘Bachelor’ announcement was met with mixed reviews

When Weber was first announced to be the next lead, the news received mixed reactions. Fans and several members of Bachelor Nation were vocal about their desire to see Mike Johnson in the lead role. He would have been the first black bachelor of the franchise.

“After 24 Bachelors, a black Bachelor should have been cast,” Johnson told Entertainment Tonight back in September. “But at the same time, ABC has been successful. They know what they’re doing for their audience. They know what they’re looking for. I wasn’t the guy they were looking for at the moment.”

Some people stated that they were “bored” with the decision to cast Weber, that they’d already seen bachelors like him before.

“I think Peter seems like a very nice guy. He seems lovely. This is absolutely nothing against him, but how many Peters have we seen before?” Former bachelorette Rachel Lindsay told ET after it was announced that Weber was cast. “What season are we on? 24. So, we’ve seen 24 Peters. I’m bored. And it’s nothing personal against him.”

Amidst some of the negative feedback Weber received upon being introduced as the next bachelor, several members of Bachelor Nation maintained that they simply trust producers to put the best person in the role.

“I feel like the people that have been doing this for years and making these decisions, make these decisions for a reason. It’s not that one person’s better than the other,” former bachelorette Hannah Brown told ET in September.

At the end of the day, host Chris Harrison and the other Bachelor producers believed Weber was the right person for the role. (We’ll have to wait and see if Bachelor Nation agrees with them.)

So Harrison and Weber have been spending a good amount of time together. The two have posted photos of them golfing and hanging out at Weber’s house.

Though they seem like chums now, apparently, during filming, Harrison had to show Weber some tough love.

“I had to stop being a friend and start showing some tough love. He needed a therapist. He needed to be helped,” Harrison said of Weber’s Bachelor journey. “It was a tough walk with him.”

“It was a really emotional, gut-wrenching season in ways that we haven’t seen in a really long time,” he continued. “It was just more of, ‘OK, I gotta quit being your buddy here and Papa Chris has to show up and now I need to treat you like I would one of my kids.'”
