‘The Bachelor’: Contestants Say They’re ‘Numb to the Weirdness’ of Being Friends With Their Exes and Competition

The Bachelor is an incredibly incestuous franchise. Contestants who are on The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, or one of the franchise’s spinoffs, typically tend to continue dating in the Bachelor dating pool even after their time on the show. Why? Well, it could be because dating another reality star only increases someone’s exposure. But it could also be because people don’t really get what it’s like to be on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette unless they themselves have been on the show.

Contestant friendships

In real life, people aren’t usually friends with their exes’ other exes. But it’s very common for Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants to remain friends after their time on the show, despite all dating the same person.

Cassie Randolph, the winner of Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor, says the idea took some getting used to.

“I’m trying to figure it out too, everyone always ends up being friends so I feel like it shouldn’t be that weird,” Cassie said on Us Weekly’s “Watch With Us” podcast,

Cassie and former contestant Caelynn Miller-Keyes are still close after their time on The Bachelor. In fact, Cassie had to convince Colton to be friends with Caelynn because they’re so close. The two women formed a connection early on in the season but their relationship cemented when they were at the center of the “here for the right reasons” drama. Several women accused the two of going on the show for reasons other than settling down with Colton. For a bit there, it felt like it was Cassie and Caelynn against the rest of the women on the show.

Colton’s also no stranger to forming relationships with fellow former contestants. He’s still friends with Blake Horstmann and Jason Tartick from when the three of them were all on Becca Kufrin’s season.

What a weekend.

According to Us Weekly, Colton and Cassie are friends with Becca and her fiancé, Garrett Yrigoyen.

“Becca texted me this morning to check in on Cass,” Colton told Us. “It’s such a big unique sorority, fraternity, family. Whatever you want to call it, we’re all bonded by this weirdness of the Bachelor franchise and the family. So we’re sort of out there to look after each other and we view each other as brother, sister, as friendships.”

The strange nature of everyone’s relationships with each other is not lost on Colton.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m not going to downplay how weird it is, like I get it, but to us it’s really not,” he said.

“We’re, like, numb to weirdness,” Cassie added.

“We can separate it,” said Colton. “She had a birthday party. I texted Caelynn to invite her and make sure she was there to support Cass, they’re friends.”

Colton and Cassie will be watching Hannah B.’s season of ‘The Bachelorette’

Despite Hannah B.’s previous relationship with Colton, Cassie and Colton will be watching and rooting for their friend’s season of The Bachelorette.

“We’re going to have Bachelorette Mondays,” said Cassie.
