‘The Bachelor’: Did The Reasons Colton Underwood and Cassie Randolph Broke up the First Time Come Back to Haunt Them?

Former bachelor Colton Underwood and his season winner Cassie Randolph announced on Mary 29 that they’d broken up. In her post on Instagram, Cassie said both she and Colton weren’t ready to talk about their split yet and that writing about it was “one of the hardest things I have had to share.”

In his post, Underwood wrote that he and Cassie had “been doing a lot of self-reflecting” and came to the conclusion that “sometimes people are just meant to be friends – and that’s okay.”

It seems like Colton and Cassie were having trouble in March

Bachelor fans who read Colton’s debut book, The First Time: Finding Myself and Looking for Love on Reality TV, know that the former football player and Cassie briefly broke up last year. In an interview Colton did with Entertainment Tonight in March, he spoke about his current relationship with Cassie as well as the reasons they’d broken up last year.

“There is no certainty right now. I mean we’re not engaged, we’re not married. I love her to bits and pieces and I think that for us, we just need to keep communicating and having those open conversations with one another,” he said of their relationship in March. “I mean, we’re just taking it day by day right now.”

“It’s still a day-by-day thing at this point,” he continued. “There is not certainty right now in this world.”

Why Colton and Cassie broke up the first time

Colton also spoke about the struggles he and Cassie went through last year that led them to break up.

“I put a lot of pressure on our relationship when I was always defending it or I was overcompensating and trying too hard. I was almost pushing her away by trying to bring her closer,” he explained. “I was saying, ‘No, we’ll be fine. We’ll be engaged by this date. We’ll do this, we’ll do this, we’ll do this.’ And it was sort of overwhelming her all over again.”

It seems like Colton desperately tried to be on the same page as Cassie but they weren’t communicating super effectively.

“[I said things] like, ‘We need to talk about this. You can’t just, like, go out in the media and say this,’ or ‘You can’t just tweet about this or Instagram like this without communicating and talking with me,'” he said. “We both just let a lot of things — little things — build up, because we got busy.”

Eventually, they were just living separate lives, a problem they reportedly had prior to their most recent split.

“She was doing a lot of things on her own and I was doing things on my own and we forgot what made us so strong together was that communication and working through problems together… being there for one another and being a team,” he said.

Cassie and Colton split the first time because they weren’t communicating well, they were living two separate lives, and Colton was putting pressure on their romantic timeline. But even if they fixed all of the above issues, that doesn’t change that some people just aren’t supposed to be together.

Here’s hoping Colton and Cassie both find what they’re looking for when they’re ready.
