‘The Bachelorette’: Tyler C. Is Inspiring Hordes Of Women To Start Running In NYC
Tyler Cameron is a beloved contestant on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette. With his James Dean good looks, feminist perspective, and Southern manners, Hannah Brown isn’t the only one falling for Cameron.
When you scroll through Cameron’s Instagram, you’ll find Bachelorette photos, modeling photos, and photos of Cameron working out–oftentimes next to large groups of women in Central Park.
Tyler C.’s NYC jogging club
Back in June, Cameron started an informal jogging club. The idea was to get people in New York City moving outside, no matter where participants were in their fitness journeys.
“Meet us at Central Park at Tavern on the Green… Whether you’re running or walking, it’s an easy way to keep each other accountable and get healthy together,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
At the first gathering, the New York Post reports about 60 participants (most of whom were women). At the next run: 100. The number of participants keeps steadily growing.
Many of the joggers who participate are beginners. So Cameron, along with the help of Nike running coach Jes Woods, has laid out a running plan that gradually increases over time, eventually building to a 5K.
“I love seeing people who can bring runners together who may have never normally run before,” Woods told The Post.
On a recent run, Jenna Bonura, 22, struggled to complete a full mile.
“I gotta build up stamina,” said Bonura. “I ran halfway, and then I started walking. Even [running] for Tyler, I’m out of shape.”
When the group needs a pep talk Cameron is happy to inspire.
“If you’re having a hard time and you’re trying to get yourself out of a hole, just one step at a time, keep your head down and keep going for it,” Cameron told the reportedly giddy crowd before a recent run. “You’ll get there eventually.”
It’s no surprise that many of the joggers in attendance perhaps have ulterior motives. It can’t be completely lost on Cameron why exactly many of these NYC women are suddenly so fitness-driven.
“All these girls are just sprinting after him. He’s gorgeous. It’s the funniest sight. It’s like The Beatles,” said Mia Krugger, a 20-year-old student.
Why Tyler C. runs
As Bachelorette fans know, Cameron almost didn’t come on the show because his father became seriously ill. During that time, he used running as a stress reliever.
“Exercise was an outlet for him to [deal] with what he was going through [with his dad],” said Matt James, one of Cameron’s friends and former football teammates.
James helped Cameron launch the jogging club, in part to raise awareness for his charity, ABC Food Tours, an organization that provides local public elementary school students with learning opportunities in NYC restaurants.
