‘The Batman’ Casting News: Another Major Name Just Through His Hat in the Ring as the Penguin

Director Matt Reeves has been hard at work casting for his upcoming superhero flick, The Batman. Reeves confirmed earlier this year that Twilight alum Robert Pattinson will be playing the eponymous hero in the movie, while Zoe Kravitz and Paul Dano have been cast as Catwoman and The Riddler. With more casting news on the way, sources now claim that another big-name actor has thrown his hat in the ring to play the Penguin.

The latest casting news on ‘The Batman’

Reeves’ vision for The Batman will see Bruce Wayne coming up against a rogue gallery of villains, including Catwoman, The Riddler, and Penguin.

While Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen were reportedly in the running to land parts in the film, the roles of Catwoman and The Riddler went to Kravitz and Dano. We still have not heard anything official about the Penguin, but insiders claim that one of Hollywood’s biggest stars is in contention for the role.

According to Cinema Blend, Colin Farrell has contacted Reeves about playing the Penguin opposite Pattinson. The actor has not confirmed the rumors, but it is a good sign that Reeves is tapping into some serious talent for the movie.

That said, fans are having a difficult time picturing Farrell as the Penguin in The Batman, a character who has traditionally been much smaller in stature.

How will Farrell fit the role?

In the comics, the Penguin (a.k.a Oswald Cobblepot) is usually portrayed as being very short. While the character is not physically imposing to Batman, he has an umbrella full of dangerous tricks and frequently has a gang of thugs that protect him.

In the films, most of the actors that have portrayed the Penguin have mirrored his smaller physical characteristics. One notable example includes Danny DeVito, who played the iconic villain in the 1992 film, Batman Returns.

But in more recent times, taller actors have filled the Penguin’s shoes. In the television show, Gotham, for instance, Robin Lord Taylor played the part in over 100 episodes. At five foot six inches, Taylor is not the tallest actor in the world, but he is much larger than the Penguin from the comics.

Farrell, of course, takes things to the next level. Not only is he close to six feet tall, but he has also considered one of the sexier actors in Hollywood. If he lands the part in The Batman, it will certainly be a departure from previous versions of the villain – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Who else is joining the cast of ‘The Batman’?

Apart from Farrell, inside sources claim that Andy Serkis is getting ready to sign on for the part of Batman’s famous butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Reeves has not confirmed the casting news, but the actor is allegedly in talks about joining the project. If Serkis lands the part, this will be his third superhero project over the years.

Serkis appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ulysses Klaue (Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther) and is set to direct Tom Hardy’s second outing in Venom 2.

He also previously worked with Reeves on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

Pattinson gets in shape to play Batman

While we wait to hear more on the casting front, Pattinson has been doing his best to get in top shape to play the caped crusader.

The Twilight alum is expected to bulk up a bit for the part and add some martial arts training to his resume. Which is why Pattinson is currently training with one of the most famous Brazilian jiu-jitsu teachers in the world in Rigan Machado.

Taking to Instagram, Machado recently shared a photo of Pattinson doing some tumbling drill on the map – and fans cannot wait to see him put those skills to work. Unfortunately, the movie is not set to open in theaters for a few more years, so fans have a bit to wait.

Machado has trained a number of different celebrities over the years, including Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Keanu Reeves (John Wick), Vin Diesel, and Ashton Kutcher.

The Batman is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 25, 2021.
