‘The Batman’: Everything Past ‘Batman’ Stars Have Said About the New Cast

The Batman franchise is probably the most-rebooted story of all time. It seems like every generation of moviegoers have had their own version of the caped crusader in their lifetime, and Matt Reeves’ The Batman is the latest rendition.

Starring Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Colin Farrell as Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot, and Paul Dano as Riddler, Reeves’ foray into the DC Comics universe promises to be a film about Batman’s second year of crimefighting.

Given that rebooting Batman is basically Hollywood’s favorite pass-time, there are a handful of actors who have taken on the iconic roles being helmed by Reeves’ cast.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Jack Nicholson have all been in Batman films

Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito played Catwoman and Penguin, respectively, in Tim Burton’s 1992 classic Batman Returns. Michael Keaton starred as Batman and Jack Nicholson played the Joker in Burton’s franchise, and George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck have all played the masked vigilante in various other films.

Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix both won Oscars for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight and Joker, respectively, and Jim Carrey starred alongside Nicole Kidman and Kilmer in Batman Forever.

The fun thing about having so many Batman movies is that when new additions come around, past cast members are asked to give advice to the newcomers.

When the news came out in October 2019 that Kravitz had been cast as Catwoman, Pfeiffer gave the Big Little Lies star some sage advice about playing the iconic role.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Christian Bale gave advice about Batwoman/Catwoman costumes

As the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil star teased, “Make sure, whilst designing the costume, they consider how you’re going to go to the bathroom—minor detail. It’s an important one.”

Bale—who played Batman in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises—gave the same note to Affleck and Pattinson. In an interview with Variety at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019, the American Hustle alum said he was looking forward to seeing the Twilight star give his take on the role.

“Good choice!” Bale said of Pattinson’s casting. “He’s interesting.”

As for his advice, the Dark Knight alum said, “Oh, same as for Ben [Affleck]: Just be able to pee by yourself. You don’t feel much like a superhero when you can’t take a piss by yourself.”

Anne Hathaway, who played Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises, also congratulated Kravitz on landing the role. On Oct. 15, 2019, Hathaway dedicated an Instagram post to the actress saying, “The biggest congrats to @zoeisabellakravitz on landing the role of a lifetime. Well, one life anyway…⁣⁣Enjoy the ride, Selena ? #Catwoman.”

Halle Berry, who played Catwoman in the solo film, took to Twitter to congratulate Kravitz. “Special shout-out to your new #CatWoman, the eternally graceful & extremely bad ass @ZoeKravitz,” Berry wrote. “Keep shining Queen & welcome to the family!”

Danny DeVito said he can’t wait to see what good friend Colin Farrell brings to Penguin

In an interview with ScreenRant in 2019, DeVito expressed his excitement about Farrell being cast as Oswald Cobblepot.

“Colin’s a great actor,” the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star said. “He’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him for many years and I think he’s going to do a great job as the Penguin. It’s going to be really interesting to see his take on it.”

Even Christopher Nolan—director of the Dark Knight trilogy—shared his reaction to the new cast. He did, after all, direct Pattinson in his most recent film, Tenet.

Speaking with Singaporean news network CNA, Tenet commented on Pattinson finding out he landed the role of Batman while on the set of Tenet.

“He certainly did not ask me for any advice,” Nolan said. “We kept a respectful silence around the issue ’til very near the end of the shoot.”

As he continued, “We said a couple of things and made a couple of jokes. We did have a little bit of a conversation about the various aspects of what he was going to be putting himself through. But I was thrilled that he was cast. I think that he’ll do an amazing job and I’m really excited to see what he does with that character.”

The Batman will come out in theaters March 4, 2022.
