The Best Movies and TV Shows Streaming on Showtime in August 2019
Summer is almost over, and you probably want to be spending your last lazy days lounging at the beach or the pool. But if sweltering temps have you reaching for the remote instead, you’re in luck. Showtime has added a ton of new movies and TV shows to its streaming lineup for August. Here are our must-watch picks for this month.

More than 60 new movies will be added to Showtime in August 2019. Here are some of the highlights:
Hitsville: The Making of Motown: This brand-new documentary about Detroit’s legendary Motown Records features exclusive interviews with label founder Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, and others, as well as rare performances and behind-the-scenes footage. Premieres Saturday, August 25 at 9/8c.
David Bowie: Finding Fame: The third film in director France Whately’s series about David Bowie arrived on Showtime on August 1. It looks back at Bowie’s early years and rise to fame and includes interviews with family members and one of his ex-girlfriends.
Four Weddings and a Funeral: Hooked on Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral? Now’s the time to revisit the classic romantic comedy that inspired the series. The 1993 movie stars Hugh Grant in the role that made him famous stateside and Andie MacDowell as his American love interest. Streaming from August 1.
The Shining: Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining is a masterpiece of psychological horror. King might not have liked Kubrick’s version of his story, but critics and fans disagreed about the 1980 movie, with legendary critic Roger Ebert, who gave it four stars, calling it “cold and frightening.” Streaming from August 1.
Gosford Park: The Downton Abbey movie hits theaters in September. Fans can whet their appetite by watching Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, a muder mystery set at a grand English country house in the early 1930s. Downton creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, and he originally imagined that series as a spinoff of the movie. Streaming from August 1.
The best TV shows on Showtime in August
Later in August, fans will get new episodes of The Affair as well a new series starring Kirsten Dunst.
The fifth and final season of The Affair premieres Sunday, August 25 at 9/8c. Anna Paquin has joined the cast as Alison and Cole’s adult daughter Joanie Lockhart. Dominic West returns as Noah and Maura Tierney is back as Helen. Guest stars include Jennifer Jason Leigh, Claes Bang, and Lyriq Bent.
Also on August 25, Showtime will premiere On Becoming a God in Central Florida. This 10-episode series stars Dunst as a woman who works a minimum-wage job at an Orlando water park who schemes her way to the top of a multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme.
Two other Showtime originals wrap up this month. The season finale of City on a Hill airs August 18 at 9/8c and the finale of The Loudest Voice airs August 11 at 10/9c.
