For sheer, powerful entertainment, there is no other show quite like Breaking Bad. The series follows the travails of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who starts cooking meth with his delinquent former student when he finds out that he has a terminal illness. Breaking Bad draws the viewer into a world where a sympathetic man becomes more and more deluded until he becomes as much of a criminal as the drug lords he works with.

The show isn’t always easy to watch, but there’s no doubt that it is a masterpiece – which makes it perfect for couples to watch together, and discuss afterward.

On the lighter side is Mad Men, a series that ran on AMC for seven seasons, from 2007 – 2015. The show centers around a New York City ad agency in the 1960s, and primarily follows Don Draper, the creative director at the agency, and the happenings of his personal and professional life.

The show is not only brilliantly funny, spiked with moments of human drama but is beautiful to look at, with stunning costume and set design that is true to the time period. Mix up a show-inspired cocktail and toast to one of the greatest series ever to air on cable television.

Netflix is also home to some of the best original shows around, including the top-rated Stranger Things. Set in a small town in the 1980s, Stranger Things is a fabulous combination of classic teen drama and supernatural thriller.

Stereotypes are subverted in the best possible way, and the characters have become the stuff of pop culture legend. Catch up on the first two seasons before the highly anticipated third season debuts on Netflix in July 2019.

‘The Crown’

If historical romance is what you crave, check out The Crown, another Netflix original. The show provides an intriguing, dramatized look at the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

With stellar acting and beautiful locations, The Crown is easily one of the best series of the past several years. Claire Foy plays the Queen, in a much-lauded performance, with excellent acting also provided by the legendary John Lithgow and Matt Smith. For royal enthusiasts, history buffs, or couples who enjoy layers of complexity in their entertainment, The Crown is a great option.
