‘The Big Bang Theory’: Is This Star Leaving the Comedy for a New TV Show?
Fans of The Big Bang Theory know that star Jim Parsons took on another project recently when he signed on to produce and narrate Young Sheldon, which is a prequel of The Big Bang Theory. However, Parsons’ involvement in the spinoff about his character’s younger years has not affected his time on the hit CBS comedy since he does not have a starring role in Young Sheldon.
Now, though, another one of The Big Bang Theory‘s star has just accepted a gig on a new TV comedy — leading some fans to wonder what that means for the beloved sitcom. Here’s what we know about the actor’s new job and how it will affect The Big Bang Theory.
This Big Bang Theory star got a new series at CBS
Simon Helberg, who plays Howard Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory, has a new job on an upcoming comedy at CBS titled Need to Know. Helberg signed a two-year pod deal with Warner Bros. Television in 2015 to develop the series with his wife, Jocelyn Towne, via their Wildline Entertainment banner.
Need to Know is a CIA workplace comedy
Helberg’s new project, Need to Know, is billed as a multi-camera CIA workplace comedy, which follows crews in the training video department of the agency.
The show will be co-written by Fuller House actor and Black-ish writer Scott Weinger, as well as Zach Ayers (State of Affairs). It will be based on Ayers’ own experiences working within that department of the Central Intelligence Agency.
He has a very good reason to stay on The Big Bang Theory
While Helberg’s new show sounds intriguing, he has good reasons to stay on The Big Bang Theory — and one of those reasons is the salary he and his other castmates have negotiated.
Helberg earns $900,000 per episode, and his contract also includes a percentage of the profits from the backend of the show.
The Big Bang Theory has already been renewed
The Big Bang Theory has been on the air since 2007 and remains one of the highest-rated comedies on network television.
In March 2017, it was announced that the Chuck Lorre-produced comedy was renewed for two more seasons, taking the show through Season 12 — another reason why fans are wondering how Helberg’s new gig will work.
Helberg won’t be leaving The Big Bang Theory
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief because Helberg’s new project on Need to Know will not impact his future on The Big Bang Theory.
Like Parsons, Helberg is only serving as producer of the new show, not starring in it. So he will continue to play Big Bang‘s resident nerdy engineer, Howard.
No premiere date for Need to Know yet
There isn’t a ton of information that has been released about Helberg’s new project and the network has not announced any premiere date.
What we do know is that in addition to Helberg, writers Weinger and Ayers are also serving as executive producer and co-executive producer on Need to Know.
He isn’t the only Big Bang Theory star producing a new show
Johnny Galecki has also taken on another job with a new CBS show. Galecki is joining his fellow actors and trying his hand at producing as well for the new comedy, By the Book. The show, which is based on the bestselling novel by A.J. Jacobs titled The Year of Living Biblically, will follow one man’s decision to live life according to the Bible after the death of his friend.
Just like with Parsons and Helberg, Galecki’s producer duties will not impact his future with The Big Bang Theory — therefore, our gang is staying together!
