‘The Big Bang Theory’: Why Jim Parsons Decided to Quit the Show
It was previously announced that The Big Bang Theory is ending after 12 seasons. Although it was reported that Jim Parsons quitting was the main reason why he never truly revealed how he came to the decision until now. So why is he leaving? Here is everything to know about that and more.
Jim Parsons said he felt like it was time to be done with The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory certainly wasn’t hurting in ratings despite being well into 12 seasons. The universe of the show also expanded with the prequel series, Young Sheldon. But Jim Parsons told Entertainment Weekly that it felt like it was time to walk away.
“It’s both as complex and as simple as just feeling innately that it was time,” Parsons said. “It speaks to a lot of things, none of them bad. There is no negative reason to stop doing Big Bang. It felt like we have been able to do this for so many years now, it doesn’t feel like there is anything left on the table. Not that we couldn’t keep doing it, but it feels like we’ve chewed all the meat off this bone.”
He then continued to talk about his personal career path. “I guess at a personal level, it feels like the right time in my life. I don’t know what’s next for me. It’s not like there is something specific I am aiming for. I’m firmly in my middle age now. I don’t know how much longer I can wear [the T-shirts] without looking really long in the tooth. In a way, it’s exciting. What is this next chapter of life? What is this next chapter for all of us? It will be very, very sad when it does end, even knowing [I am] okay with it.”
He previously made an Instagram post saying he was grateful to the cast and crew
Around the announcement of the ending of the show, Parsons made an Instagram post. “I am terribly grateful for the cast in this picture and the cast members who aren’t pictured here,” the actor wrote “whether they were in one scene or many episodes along the way; you are all my playmates that I have fallen in love with and who have become part of my life on set and off.”
Parsons became the highest-paid actor on TV through the show
The star was the highest-paid actor on television in 2018 thanks to his work on the show. He made $26.5 million pretax in the 12 months before June 1, 2018, according to Forbes. He was making $1 million per episode and the rest of the cast also were at the top of the list.
John Galecki came in second at $25 million, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg were tied at third with $23.5 million. So the cast is definitely walking away from big paychecks in order to end the show.
The spirit of the show will still continue through Young Sheldon, which Jim Parsons does narrate. It should be interesting to find out what Parsons and the rest of the cast will do next.
