Marriages don’t exactly last very long in Hollywood. However, because celebrities typically have never-ending resources and are used to the best that money can offer, their weddings tend to be top-notch and full of the glitz and glamour. Still, celebrities are human beings, which means, like anyone else, they are prone to mishaps, mistakes, and outright disasters.
From saying the wrong name at the altar to losing teeth, here are some of the biggest celebrity wedding disasters ever. Luckily, these wedding hiccups didn’t necessarily mean the entire wedding was a wash.
Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson
When they wed in 2014, fashion designer Jessica Simpson and her hunky hubby, Eric Johnson, had already been together for quite some time. In fact, they already had two babies together, a son, Ace, and a daughter, Maxwell. Still, that didn’t stop their nerves from getting the best of them on their big day.
Johnson got super choked up while reciting his vows, but Simpson made the biggest snafu. According to E! News, “She was so overwhelmed that instead of addressing Eric, she said her own name! Luckily, she laughed it off and started over again.”
We’re just happy that the couple was and still is very happy.
Next: A traitorous bagel
Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie
Actress Hilary Duff and former pro-hockey player Mike Comrie are no longer an item, but they do have a beautiful son named Luca together. Unfortunately, their time together as husband and wife started off disastrous. Everything was in order the morning of their wedding, and Duff was enjoying a bagel for breakfast before the festivities began.
It must have been the hardest bagel on earth because the actress looked down after biting into it and realized she’d lost a tooth. Duff later told Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen Show, “I started laughing at myself and then I really burst into tears.”
Luckily, Duff’s wedding planner was able to get her an emergency dental appointment, so her pearly whites were in perfect condition by the time her ceremony began.
Next: A royal disaster
Princess Diana and Prince Charles
We all know that the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage was a complete disaster, and the mishaps at their royal wedding should have been our first indication that something was dreadfully wrong. The Princess of Wales wrinkled her 25-foot train, her tiara was so heavy that it gave her a headache, and one of her 5-year-old attendants took quite a tumble.
Still, the most public disasters on the royal wedding day happened at the altar. Princess Diana mangled her future husband’s name, calling him Charles Philip Arthur George instead of Philip Charles Arthur George. Also, the prince, who was in love with another woman at the time, failed to kiss his bride after their vows were said.
Next: Transportation in turmoil
Trojan Bellisario and Patrick J. Adams
With the cast of Suits and Pretty Little Liars in one wedding party, things are bound to get pretty rowdy. When Pretty Little Liars actress Torian Bellisario married Suits actor Patrick J. Adams in 2016, we’re sure the couple imagined their day going off without a hitch. Unfortunately, because the groom wanted to arrive in style, that wasn’t the case.
Adams drove the wedding party to the ceremony in a converted school bus (please don’t ask us why), and of course, it got stuck. It was then up to the groomsmen, who were all wearing nice suits to push the bus out of the ditch. Bellisario and Adams have some amazing friends.
Next: When food poisoning strikes
Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe
Comedian Seth Myers was all set to marry his human rights attorney wife, Alexi Ashe, in 2013. In fact, Ashe has planned every single detail of their big day perfect. Unfortunately, some spoiled seafood nearly ruined it all.
Meyers explained to David Letterman, “The rehearsal dinner the night before, my wife, to begin with, the MVP of the wedding, as most wives are planned the whole thing. Every detail. Day before the wedding eats an oyster. Food poisoning. Knocks her out.”
Ashe’s case of food poising was so severe that she spent the morning of her wedding in the hospital where the nurses advised her to call the whole thing off. Being a rockstar badass, Ashe proceeded with her plans and tied the knot anyway.
Next: A marble mix-up
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
When you think of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, then you probably think of the most over-the-top wedding in the history of all weddings. Seriously, Kimye gave us so much information and details about their wedding that we felt like we were there as guests. The notoriously public couple tied the knot at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, back in May 2014, and everything was stunning and beautiful — except for one rather massive snafu.
Becuase Kimye is Kimye, they opted to carve their guests’ names into their marble reception table instead of simply doing a nice seating chart or using removable cards. Unfortunately, many guests didn’t show up, tons of others brought a full entourage of people, and even more tackily, a ton of guests’ names were misspelled on the marble.
On top of that, two marble statues that the couple had made for their $3 million wedding were damaged in route to the venue. We think that marble might not be the best choice for a wedding.
Next: A dress and a candle
Kym Johnson and Robert Herjavec
It was like a match made in heaven when Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Kym Johnson got engaged to her partner, business mogul Robert Herjavec. Everything was going perfectly during the couple’s 2016 wedding until Johnson’s Monique Lhuillier wedding gown caught on fire.
Herjavec told People, “We smelled something, and we thought, is someone having a barbecue? Then we realized that Kym’s dress was on fire!”
Luckily, only the bottom of Johnson’s dress was burned, and her man of honor was able to stamp out the flames. We’re thinking candles at weddings is a terrible idea.
Next: A sparkly explosion
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have an iconic relationship, but that doesn’t mean that the actors’ wedding was magical. In fact, it was so disastrous that Martha Stewart had to send in her team to save the day. The couple wed in 2012 in Charleston. However, their first venue choice ended up being a disaster, and Martha Stewart’s team had to fly in and come up with another location at the very last minute.
The ceremony itself was flawless, but the reception brought its own trials and tribulations. Lively was watching her dear friend, Florence Welch, perform when she looked down and noticed a massive burn on her dress. A sparkler had burned through the material when she was dancing. Before Lively could freak out, her new hubby Reynolds leaped to his feet to tell her everything was still perfect.
Next: Second time is not the charm
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s road to marital bliss has been rocky. The pair were initially engaged to be married in 2011, but Cavallari called off the wedding, even returning gifts to guests at the very last minute.
After the couple decided to make it work, they attended therapy and learned to communicate better. When they decided to tie the knot again in 2013, everything still didn’t go according to plan. In her book, Balancing in Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work, Cavallari revealed that on the morning of her wedding, “Brando [the dog] bit me right on the eye.”
Luckily, the former Hills star’s makeup artist came to the rescue and glued her wound shut.
Next: A bride and her bucket
Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy
Though their bitter marriage is long over, there was a time when Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy were happy. In fact, Frankel was pregnant with their daughter, Bryn, at their 2010 wedding. Since the Real Housewives of New York castmember’s wedding was televised, viewers got all of the behind-the-scenes wedding drama.
Heavily pregnant, Frankel couldn’t exactly hold her bladder or run out to the bathroom in her gown before the beginning of the ceremony. Instead, her assistant, Julie Plake, and her wedding planner, Shawn Rabideau, found a bucket and helped the Skinny Girl mogul hike up her dress, and she used the restroom right where she was.
Next: The runaway veil
Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild
Nicky Hilton was aiming for a royal wedding when she married banker James Rothschild in 2015. In fact, the couple tied the knot at Kensington Palace in London. Draped in a stunning Valentino gown that costs many thousands of dollars, everything was going well — until Hilton’s gown got stuck underneath a car wheel.
Luckily, someone noticed right away and was able to untangle the heiress from what would have surely been a horrendous disaster.
Next: Two natural disasters in one day
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t let two natural disasters prevent their 2002 wedding from going off without a hitch. In fact, their wedding probably pulled them closer together. After all, they’ve been together for over 15 years. The duo decided to tie the knot in Mexico, but they didn’t expect Hurricane Hernan to move their wedding from the beach inside.
Though the wedding went off swimmingly, an earthquake after the wedding hit the area as guests were leaving. Luckily, no one was hurt.
Next: Blemishes and hives
Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson
When Solange Knowles married her director hubby, Alan Ferguson, back in 2014, she had one of the chicest and most iconic weddings looks of all time, donning a glorious fro and a white jumpsuit. Unfortunately, everything didn’t exactly work seamlessly. The day before her big day, Knowles had a bit of a breakout, so she decided to cover her blemishes with makeup.
Unfortunately, the singer’s sensitive skin reacted severely to the makeup, and by the end of her reception, Knowles was covered in hives.
Next: Helicopters and guns
Madonna and Sean Penn
When Madonna and Sean Penn married in 1985, they were already massive celebrities. Of course, that meant the paparazzi was going to try and get as many photos and details as they could. A notorious bad boy with a volatile temper, Penn wasn’t about to let that happen.
When “F*CK OFF” messages written in the sand didn’t keep the paparazzi from flying their helicopters over the ceremony, Penn allegedly got a gun and began shooting at the choppers.
Next: A stolen document
Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas
Sparks flew when Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas met on the set of ABC’s Once Upon A Time. In fact, it was like a fairy tale when the pair tied the knot three years later. Unfortunately, disaster struck before they could even get down the aisle.
Just before their wedding, someone broke into their wedding planner’s car and stole the couple’s ketubah (a Jewish prenuptial agreement that is a key feature in a traditional Jewish wedding.) Luckily, some good folks who could speak Hebrew found the ketubah and figured out who it belonged to.
Eventually, Goodwin and Dallas were able to retrieve their precious document. However, we’re sure they were pretty freaked out in the midst of it all.
