The ‘Black Panther’ Footage That Had Everyone at Comic-Con Talking
At San Diego Comic-Con 2017, new footage of Black Panther was revealed during Marvel’s panel in Hall H. Director Ryan Coogler and nine members of the film’s all-star cast took the stage to talk with host Chris Hardwick about their roles and reveal a new clip.
This footage has been deemed a Comic-Con exclusive and won’t be seen by the rest of the public, barring a leak. But that didn’t stop the outlets present from detailing what they saw for the rest of us to read about. Here’s what we’ve learned from those who saw the sneak peek.
1. A secret civilization
Everything we’ve seen so far regarding Wakanda has painted it as a society hidden from the rest of the world. In the trailer released in June, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) tells his captor, Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) about the country: “Explorers have searched for it. Called it El Dorado … I’m the only one who’s seen it, and made it out alive.”
Wakanda and its citizens have kept to themselves for the most part, but the footage apparently saw T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) speaking with the members of the U.N. But this probably isn’t a decision all are happy with. As Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Nakia in the film, said during the panel, “Wakanda needs to know what’s going on around the world. The world does not need to know what’s going on in Wakanda.”
2. A not-so-impossible mission
The opening scene of the footage shows several major characters in a casino, seemingly on a mission to capture Klaue. A peaceful trade off begins, but the fighting breaks out quickly when an undercover Okoye (Danai Gurira) is identified.
While dissecting the footage, ScreenJunkies’ Adam Hlavac said the scene “felt very 007,” while Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier said the Wakanda heroes communicated “Mission: Impossible style.” Roth Cornet also said during the ScreenJunkies talk that this scene takes place in Korea, so it sounds like there’s going to be a bit of international travel in the film.
3. Klaw gets his new claw
Marvel audience’s first met Klaue (known as Klaw in the comics) in Avengers: Age of Ultron, when he was confronted by the Maximoff twins and forced to deal with the big baddie himself. During his encounter with Ultron, Klaue compares him to Stark — which is so infuriating to the robot, that he slices off Klaue’s arm and kicks him down the stairs.
The aforementioned Black Panther trailer sees Klaue still without an arm, but apparently, this changes. It sounds like T’Challa and Klaue come face to face during the casino battle, and Klaue uses his new, powerful arm to fend off Black Panther.
4. A car chase with a twist
It seems like Black Panther has a thing for cars. In Captain America: Civil War, we’re treated to a scene in which he chases down Bucky Barnes through a tunnel, jumping from one car to another and hanging off the back of the vehicle Cap himself drives.
So it wasn’t too surprising to see a shot of a costumed Black Panther doing a seriously impressive spin off a flipping car and landing on another (both Lexus’ naturally, as the company was announced as a corporate partner for the film). But slightly more shocking was the moment where, as Hlavac describes it, “he jumps on the side of a building and is running on the side of a building, and then jumps onto a car.” This is one we’ll have to see to believe.
5. The technology princess
One Black Panther player we haven’t seen very much of is Shuri. The sister of T’Challa is portrayed by newcomer Letitia Wright, who gave a little insight into the character and her impressive background.
“She is like the technological whiz of Wakanda,” Wright said to Hardwick. “She designs all the new technology. She’s a scientist. And she was, like, a dream role to play. You know, inspirational, innovative, just a strong black woman!”
6. Frenemies compete
Not so much a villain as he is a competitor, Erik Killmonger “has his eyes on the throne,” according to his portrayer, Michael B. Jordan. And though we catch a glimpse of him in the trailers released, he gets a bigger part in the secret footage.
From Gizmodo, regarding a final scene between Killmonger and King T’Challa: “‘What do you want?’ asks the King. Suddenly the two of them are outside. Killmonger puts on a gold tinted panther suit and the two start to fight. The battle spills into a large, deep hole and as they fall, they keep fighting.”
7. The cast reacts
Among all of the many surprising things learned from the footage, one of the most shocking was the audience reaction to it. Specifically, the actors who are actually in the film, who were also seeing the clip for the first time.
Following the viewing, the crowd rose in a standing ovation, but those on stage were too busy embracing one another, jumping up and down, and crying. It was a beautiful moment, and Marvel studio head Kevin Feige joined the cast and Coogler as they cheered and walked off stage together.
