The Cast of ‘Glee’ Reacts to Naya Rivera’s Tragic Disappearance

When Naya Rivera was reported missing after swimming with her son in Ventura County, California, many were hopeful that the 33-year-old had found shelter and was somehow still alive.

Now, two days since her disappearance, the search-and-rescue operation by authorities in the area of Lake Piru, where the single mother and her four-year-old son had taken a boat out on the water on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, has transitioned to a search-and-recovery operation.

Hope of finding the actor alive has given way to a search for her body. Her former Glee co-stars and friends are reacting on social media.

Rumors of a ‘Glee’ Curse

With Rivera’s disappearance and presumed death, talk has already begun of a supposed Glee curse.

Actor Cory Monteith, who portrayed Finn Hudson, was 31 when he overdosed on heroin in 2013. Lea Michele, on the fifth anniversary of Monteith’s passing in 2018, tweeted, “There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they have gone, the light remains.”

And in 2018, actor Mark Salling, who on the series played Noah “Puck” Puckerman, committed suicide. In 2015, Salling was arrested for child pornography possession and faced up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to the charges, but took his life by hanging on Jan. 30, 2018.

The latest on Naya Rivera’s disappearance

Authorities have continued their search for Rivera. Video showing the singer and her son renting a boat and the little boy’s account of what happened are all police have to try to explain what might have happened to his mother.

Helicopters and an underwater sonar system are being employed to help in the search for the actor, who portrayed Santana Lopez on Glee from 2009 to 2015.

Sergeant Kevin Donoghue of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office told the press on July 9, 2020, “We’ve had no indication, after talking to her son, that Ms. Rivera made it to shore. So the focus of our search efforts are in the water at this time.”

The officer added that this particular lake makes search efforts especially daunting due to how difficult it is to navigate underwater.

“In this particular lake, in that area, there’s a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglements,” he said. “It makes it unsafe for the divers, and it makes a more complicated search.”

Rivera’s former colleagues’ reactions

Understandably, Rivera’s former cast members from Glee are worried, concerned, and trying to hope for the very best outcome for their colleague and friend.

Chord Overstreet, who played Sam Evans on the series, tweeted, “love and hug on the people you can, while you can. I love you. Everyone please send out your prayers.”

“I am hoping against hope…,” tweeted actor Iqbal Theba, who played Principal Figgins on the series, “this was all a big joke and she’ll appear from somewhere laughing her heart out.”

Rivera’s former The Royal Family co-star, Jackée Harry, tweeted her hope for the actor to be found alive and well.

“Prayers up for the lovely Naya Rivera,” she wrote. “We starred alongside one another in her first very television series, The Royal Family, and I’ve watched her career blossom ever since. Please God, don’t cut this life short.”
