Meghan Markle and Prince Harry haven’t been in the spotlight much lately since the couple has retreated to the U.S for their six-week break from royal duties. While their trip was meant to be some downtime, Markle has been keeping very busy and taking advantage of her time in the states.

Why Markle and Harry are taking a break from royal duties

Following the prince and former actress’ royal tour to South Africa, Malawi, Angola, and Botswana in October, a documentary about the pair aired and had everyone talking. In Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, the duke and duchess admitted that they have had difficulties over the past year dealing with the constant media attention and scrutiny.

“I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair. And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile,” Markle told journalist Tom Bradby.

Harry also explained how they feel about being the subject of so many rumors.

“For me and for my wife, of course, there’s a lot of stuff that hurts — especially when the majority of it is untrue. But all we need to do is focus on being real, focus on being the people we are and standing up for what we believe in,” he said. “I will not be bullied into carrying a game that killed my mum.”

Following the documentary, it was announced that the pair would be taking a six-week break to spend time in the U.S. out of the public eye.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month,” a spokesperson for the couple said. “Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland. This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the royal family, and has the support of the queen.”

If you thought the former Suits star was just going to sit back with her feet up while on sabbatical you’re wrong. Even though she is on break, Markle is trying to maximize her time in the U.S. by using her high-profile contacts such as Oprah Winfrey and Serena Williams to promote and support her Sussex Royal Foundation.

Sources close to Markle said, “What is most interesting is that Meghan feels that while the charity will be a worldwide venture, she sees Hollywood and American business circles as [a] key to fundraising.”

Prince Harry’s wife also met with Keleigh Thomas Morgan, her former publicist and a partner at celebrity PR firm Sunshine Sachs.

An insider told the Telegraph, “This is a mission that Meghan has been on for a long time. Even in her younger years in Hollywood, she wanted to work towards creating an international charity changing lives. Now that she has the platform and profile of being a British royal she can truly build this plan.”

The source added, “She sees this foundation as one of the key factors in creating a legacy as a new royal and Harry is right behind her. While Harry and Meghan are technically on rest, she is not the type of woman who likes doing nothing; so this break actually could be seen by some as very fortuitous.”
