The Craziest Things Donald Trump Has Said About His Marriage to Ivana Trump
Ivana and Donald Trump’s divorce was one of the biggest scandals of the early ‘90s. The two wed in 1977 and became parents to Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, but their marriage came crashing down once Trump was exposed for having an affair with Marla Maples.
Their divorce may have been messy, but Ivana claims to now have a friendly relationship with her ex. However, looking back on the things Trump has said about his marriage to Ivana, we can’t believe they ever returned to being on good terms.
These are the craziest things Trump has said about his marriage to Ivana, including what he would still be doing if he hadn’t been caught (page 5) and the one thing he hated about his wife that led to their divorce (page 6).
1. He avoided calling his marriage monogamous
During and interview with Glenn Plaskin, Trump was asked if marriage was equivalent to having a monogamous relationship — and his answer wasn’t great. He responded, “I don’t have to answer that. I never speak about my wife — which is one of the advantages of not being a politician. My marriage is and should be a personal thing.”
He continued, “I think any man enjoys flirtations, and if he said he didn’t, he’d be lying or he’d be a politician trying to get the extra four votes.”
Next: He didn’t exactly rave about their romance.
2. He said their marriage was ‘just fine’
Trump didn’t exactly rave about the romantic side of his relationship with Ivana. During his interview with Plaskin, Trump couldn’t seem to come up with any words to describe her in a loving way.
Trump claimed his marriage was “just fine,” and called her a “very kind and good woman.” However, when pushed to discuss their relationship, he pivoted conversation to her managerial skills.
He described, “I also think she has the instincts and drive of a good manager. She’s focused and she’s a perfectionist … I never comment on romance … she’s a great mother, a good woman who does a good job.”
Next: His marriage proposal was paired with a threat.
3. Trump threatened Ivana to marry him
Trump’s marriage to Ivana didn’t exactly start with the most romantic of proposals. He popped the question while on a ski vacation, which, we’ll admit, sounds like a lovely setting for an engagement.
However, that mood was surely crushed when he threatened, “If you don’t marry me, you’ll ruin your life.”
Next: They agreed on this aspect of parenting.
4. Ivana was in charge of the parenting
Ivana hasn’t been shy in taking the credit for raising Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka. In her 2017 book, Raising Trump, Ivana set the record straight.
“Some people — including Hillary Clinton — consider [the kids] to be Donald Trump’s finest accomplishments,” she wrote. “I believe the credit for raising such great kids belongs to me.”
While others may give Trump undeserved credit for raising their kids, Trump himself hasn’t hidden the fact that he left Ivana to doing all the parenting.
In his 1987 book, The Art of the Deal, Trump admitted, “I adore [my kids], but I’ve never been great at playing with toy trucks and dolls. I tell Donny I’ll be home as soon as I can, but he insists on a time. Perhaps he’s got my genes: the kid won’t take no for an answer.”
Next: He would have kept doing this — if he wasn’t caught.
5. He would have kept cheating if he didn’t get caught
Trump apparently had no shame in having an affair with his eventual second wife, Marla Maples, while still married to Ivana. He admitted in a 1994 interview that if he hadn’t been caught, he probably would have kept the whole thing going.
Speaking on ABC’s Primetime, he claimed, “Well it’s interesting, because it’s possible that you know, maybe it would still be going on. I’m not sure.”
Trump even added, “My life was so great in so many ways. The business was so great … a beautiful girlfriend, a beautiful wife, a beautiful everything. Life was just a bowl of cherries.”
Next: Trump hated this part of Ivana.
6. He hated her breast implants
While Trump’s affair was the ultimate end to his relationship with Ivana, there was apparently another factor that came into play. Trump reportedly hated her breast implants, and it was enough to cause a rift in their marriage.
According to The Economist, “When Mr. Trump divorced the first of his three wives, Ivana, he let the New York tabloids know that one reason for the separation was that her breast implants felt all wrong.”
Next: We can definitely hear him saying this after their split.
7. ‘She totally loves me’
During the time of Trump and Ivana’s divorce, their faces were all over tabloids. On the Valentine’s Day issue of Daily News in 1990, Ivana was quoted saying, “I am afraid. I know the children and I will be Donald’s next project.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s headline quote read, “Ivana doesn’t want the money. She wants Donald. She totally loves me.” Sure, this was from a tabloid, so who knows if he actually said it. But we can’t deny that we can totally hear it coming out of his mouth, considering his overly confident attitude he’s had with women over the years.
