The 53-year-old BAFTA award-winning actress who is known for her role in the Harry Potter franchise and more recently her appearance in Ocean’s 8 among others, will next grace the small screen with her presence in The Crown. For those who are unfamiliar with the Netflix original series — start binge-watching Seasons 1 and 2 before new episodes become available in November — Season 3 means new cast members.
Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (Check out her other roles here.) will be playing Queen Elizabeth II, taking over for Claire Foy, who earned a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild award for her performance as a young Queen Elizabeth II. Talk about leaving Colman with big shoes — or should we say a big crown — to fill.
Princess Margaret had suggestions for Bonham Carter on her acting
Before filming began on Season 3, Bonham Carter met with a psychic to speak to Princess Margaret who died in 2002 at the age of 71. Bonham Carter said she always consults a psychic if she’s portraying a person who is now deceased, according to The Telegraph.
“When you play someone real, you really want their blessing because you do have a responsibility,” she said.
The actress had a “little chat” with Princess Margaret and asked if she could play her in The Crown to which the late royal said it’d be fine as long as she learned how to properly use a cigarette holder.
According to Bonham Carter, Princess Margaret told her to “get the smoking right, I smoked in a good way, and remember the cigarette holder was as much a weapon for expression as it was for smoking.”
Like many fans of the series, Princess Margaret seemed to be happy with the casting choice.
“She said, apparently, she was glad it was me,” Bonham Carter explained.
She continued saying, “I asked her, ‘Are you OK with me playing you?’ And she said, ‘You’re better than the other actress that they were thinking of.’”

“That made me think maybe she is here because it’s a really classic Margaret thing to say – she is really good at complimenting you and putting you down at the same time,” Bonham Carter added before saying, “Then she said, ‘But you’re going to have to brush up and be more groomed and neater.’”
Viewers have been anxiously awaiting the show’s return and only recently did Netflix release the show’s return date. On The Crown’s official Twitter page fans got their first glimpse of new cast members in costume.
With a one-word tweet, “Hope,” Netflix released a picture of Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret in July of 2018.
