‘The Crown’ Season 3 Trailer Showcases a New Era for the Royals
When does the third season of ‘The Crown’ take place?
The official Netflix description of the show’s junior year reads, “The third season of The Crown sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth (Colman) and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain. From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age – the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s – Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also the more turbulent world.”
The third and fourth seasons, like the first and second, will feature the same cast members before swapping once again for the fifth and sixth seasons due to a time jump.
What happens in ‘The Crown’ season 3 trailer?
Heavy plot points aren’t revealed, but we do get a good amount of information in the first trailer. It finds Elizabeth II reflecting on her work so far as Queen. A new prime minister, Harold Wilson, is elected to office amid Britain in turmoil.
The sibling rivalry between Elizabeth and Margaret seems to reach new heights in the third season too. We get to see the first shots of Princess Anne (Erin Doherty) and Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), including the latter’s romantic relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles (Emerald Fennell). Even more contentious royal relationships are hinted, including Philip and Charles, along with Margaret and Tony. There’s even a glimpse of a major British death, likely an infamous prime minister.
What has the cast said about the third season of ‘The Crown’?
In interviews, Colman has talked about the Aberfan incident. The aftermath of it seems to be shown briefly in the trailer.
“There’s one episode where they tell the story of Aberfan –which, shamefully, I didn’t know – and it was so awful, tragic and harrowing, and I really struggled with it,” she said in an interview. “So they gave me an earpiece and put on the Shipping Forecast and I just listened to that and pretended that was all that was going on.”
Bonham Carter, who will portray Margaret in a pivotal time in her life, contacted a psychic to talk to the late royal and get her blessing.
She said that Margaret told her she preferred her more than the other actress they were considering. She allegedly told Carter, “But you’re going to have to brush up and be more groomed and neater. Get the smoking right. I smoked in a very particular way. Remember that – this is a big note – the cigarette holder was as much a weapon for expression as it was for smoking.”
The Crown Season 3 premieres on November 17, 2019.
