Is ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Coming to Broadway?

The Devil Wears Prada: A girl garbed in oversized sweaters and slacks from Kohls meets a fashion icon and Runway magazine editor. The former – Andy Sachs – a recent college graduate who doesn’t know her blue from her cerulean, but possesses more determination than conceivable. The latter – Miranda Priestly – a difficult to please and diabolical industry influence.

When this modern classic first hit the silver screen back in 2006, Meryl Streep starred as the scrutinizing Miranda Priestly, while Anne Hathaway played Andy Sachs. With a supporting cast worth writing home about – including Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Simon Baker – this soon-to-be Broadway show has a lot to live up to.

Meryl Streep took home a Golden Globe, a Satellite Award, a London Film Critics’ Circle Award, and a National Society of Film Critics Award for her performance. Inherently tied to this role, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Streep playing the part; however, that hasn’t stopped fans from devising their dream casts.

With no word yet out on who’s set to star in the show, let’s continue hoping that Meryl Streep reprise her role. Let’s just say it’s good to know that she has impressively pulled off musically inclined characters.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ on Broadway will be a musical

With Elton John composing the score, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ on Broadway is likely to be a fast-paced and articulate rock ballad infused musical. Famous for producing the melodies behind Disney’s The Lion King and the Tony-Award winning show Aida, Elton John brings an unparalleled emotional fervor to his works.

Shaina Taub is working alongside Elton John as the production’s lyricist. Taub is an American singer, composer, and musician known for starring in and composing three adaptations of famous Shakespearean works: Twelfth Night (in 2016 and 2018) and As You Like It.

Kevin McCollum is producing the show, according to Playbill. The man behind several highly accomplished Broadway musicals, McCollum is most recognized for producing Something Rotten! and Motown The Musical.

Writer Paul Rudnick will be working alongside John and Taub in terms of story elements. Transforming a movie into a musical takes a little bit more than adding a score and some lyrics, and Rudnick is the accomplished playwright needed to make this transition seamless. Rudnick is most known for his award-winning production I Hate Hamlet, The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, and I Shudder.

Who will star in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ on Broadway?

As a show still lacking a production timeline and integral creative team members, it seems like the casting announcements for Broadway’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ may not come anytime soon. However, it’s important to note that all of the major original cast members boast impressive musical talent.

Just maybe, the three leading women in the original movie –Hathaway, Blunt, and Streep – will return for the Broadway musical adaptation.

Emily Blunt most recently starred as the icon herself in Mary Poppins Returns, successfully following in the footsteps of the incomparable Julie Andrews. Anne Hathaway took an Oscar for her performance in Les Miserables. And let us not forget that Meryl Streep has starred in multiple musical movies in the last decade alone: Into the Woods, Ricki and the Flash, Mary Poppins Returns, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again to name a few.

While it seems unlikely that all three leading women will return for the Broadway musical, here’s to hoping that we see at least one take to the stage.
