The Discreet Way Celebrities Like Selena Gomez and Hailey Baldwin Are Sending Mighty Messages
There are a lot of different ways that celebrities send out hidden messages about their lives or careers. For example, Taylor Swift has been known for putting all kinds of “Easter eggs” in her music videos, performances, interviews, and social media posts.
Meanwhile, some musicians also like to drop hints in their lyrics. However, there is a new trend picking up in Hollywood for sending out messages: tiny tattoos.
A number of celebrities — like Selena Gomez and Hailey Baldwin — these days are getting tattoos that are small but full of special meanings. Read on below to see some cool examples.
Selena Gomez is an executive producer on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which has messages about bullying and teen suicide. In 2017, Gomez and a few of the show’s cast members decided to get matching tattoos to further spread the message of the show.
Their special ink is a black semicolon, which has been used as a symbol for suicide prevention. The semicolon represents the fact that life should continue in the same sense that a semicolon is not the end of a sentence.
The cast of ‘Pretty Little Liars’
Another group of cast members who decided to commemorate their series is the girls from Pretty Little Liars. After wrapping up their hit TV show in 2016, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Sasha Pieterse, and Janel Parrish each got their character’s initials tattooed on their index finger — the same finger that was used in the famous “shh” intros for the series.
Bellisario shared that they all thought the idea was “cheesy” at first. But it “ended up being a goofy idea that became very sentimental.”
In 2016, model Cara Delevingne showed off a tattoo of a snake on one of her hands. It starts at the end of her palm and runs to her middle finger. The word “feral” also appears alongside the tattoo. Delevinge told The Sun of the ink’s symbolism: “I think I am [feral], and it’s about reinvention, shedding of old skin, new beginnings, new life.”
Lea Michele is another fan of small tattoos. She actually has several of them on her body, though there are a few that hold special, sentimental meanings.
Michele’s ex-boyfriend, Cory Monteith, passed away in 2013 when the two of them were still together. In honor of him, she had the name “Finn” as well as the number “5” inked.
Michele and Monteith used to star in Glee together. On the show, Monteith was a quarterback named Finn Hudson who sported the number “5” on his jersey.
Additionally, Michele also has a picture of a small coffee cup on her finger. It is meant to be a memory of her late grandmother, who made Michele her first cup of coffee.
Hailey Baldwin seems to really like getting tiny, matching tattoos with her loved ones. For example, she and BFF Kendall Jenner both got a broken heart tattooed on their fingers.
On another finger is the word “Baldwin,” which she got with her cousin, Ireland Baldwin. The two of them are daughters of the famous Baldwin Brothers.
Demi Lovato has over 20 tattoos on her body, and earlier this year she added a few more small-but-meaningful ones to her collection.
In January, Lovato showed off her tattoo of a rose, which is believed to symbolize sobriety. Lovato has been open about her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, and January marked her six months of sobriety. According to PopSugar, a rose can represent “hope and new beginnings contrasted against the thorns that can represent loss.”
In June, Lovato sported another ink on her finger. This one is the word “me,” which is meant to be a reminder for her to take care of herself. She wrote on her Instagram story: “You can’t love anyone unless you love yourself first.”
