‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: The ‘Big Reveal’ Fans Really Want in the Finale

It’s been a relatively quiet year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There will be no MCU movies for the first time since 2009.

That doesn’t mean things aren’t about to get interesting for the franchise in a big way, however. Over the course of the next couple of years, Disney+ is set to be the home of several streaming series focusing on characters from the MCU. One of those shows set to debut in 2021 is called The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While it’s not clear exactly what direction the series will take, there’s one outcome MCU fans are already hoping for in the finale and it relates to who becomes the next Captain America.

We first meet Bucky Barnes as the best friend of Steve Rogers in Captain America; The First Avenger. He’s a loyal and trustworthy friend to Steve even before his transformation into Captain America. He joins Steve’s battalion in World War II, following him across Europe.

He’s later seemingly killed by HYDRA agents only to be kidnapped by them, injected with super-soldier serum, and turned into an agent known as the Winter Soldier. Becoming an assassin, he’s eventually defeated by Steve and escapes. Steve later rescues him during the events of Captain America: Civil War, fighting alongside him as Tony Stark learns it was the Winter Soldier who killed his parents.

From there, Bucky is an ally to Steve and the Avengers, helping them fight Thanos. While he perishes after Thanos’s snap, he returns after it’s reversed and helps defeat Thanos’s army.

We first meet Sam Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as he aids Steve in his fight against HYDRA and Bucky. Sam then joins the Avengers, fighting with Steve during the events of Civil War.

He too perishes during Thanos’s snap but is the first hero to signify his return with a callback to how he met Steve, returning with the phrase “On your left.”

What will ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ be about?

Bucky and Sam’s common thread is obviously the connection they both had to Steve Rogers.  This show will follow the duo’s developing partnership as former allies to Captain America.

Not a lot of plot details have been revealed, but we do know that Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan will reprise their roles as the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, respectively. We also know that Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo will return after his appearance in Civil War

There are a lot of different directions the show can take, but one expectation is that the MCU will finally name a replacement for Captain America with someone else taking up the shield. But who will it be, and when will it happen? That’s what MCU fans are most excited to find out.

An MCU fan took to Reddit to post a picture of Stan and Wilson on set and in costume while hanging out (while the two were socially distanced, one commenter noted the pic was from November 2019). It was black and white, and if you squinted it looked like Mackie may have been wearing the Captain America suit. One fan quickly downplayed this, however, noting:

“I think that is the suit from the promo poster and art that surfaced a while ago- a new iteration of the Falcon suit with white and red accents. I’m positive that they’ll save his Captain America suit for a big reveal on screen.”

Sam’s going to be the next Captain America, but there’s still the question of when that will happen. Some fans think the perfect time for it would be the season one finale of this show, and it’s hard to argue with that. It would give the show time to build up to that moment and make it even more meaningful when it does happen.
