The Fate of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Depends on the 1 Character the Show Will Never Replace
Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most popular shows on television – just about everyone is aware of that fact. Each week, millions of fans tune in to see the drama unfold at Grey-Sloan Memorial, and the show has proven never to disappoint.
Over the years, it seems that the fan base of Grey’s Anatomy has grown even bigger, with so many people getting hooked on the plot twists, surprises, and relationships.
Recently, Grey’s Anatomy was confirmed for season 17, making it one of the longest-running television shows in recent history. Although it is difficult to predict what will happen in the future, most fans will surely be sad if this is the last season for their favorite show.
Even so, there is really only one person who knows exactly when and if Grey’s Anatomy will ever come to an end.
The show continues to be wildly successful, and fans don’t show any signs of losing interest anytime soon.
The latest ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ renewal was no surprise to fans
According to Hollywood Reporter, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when the show was picked up for yet another season. Apparently, Ellen Pompeo had already signed a two-year contract to continue starring in Grey’s Anatomy, so fans were pretty certain that they would be treated to at least one more season of their favorite primetime drama.
One thing that even diehard fans may not be aware of is the fact that Pompeo, as the main focus of the show, is now the highest-paid actress on a television drama series. So, how much has she earned in the past, and what can she expect to take home in the upcoming season?
According to CNBC, her new contract is earning her a jaw-dropping $20 million per year.
That doesn’t mean that she wasn’t making a pretty penny in earlier seasons of the show. Pompeo’s paycheck for each episode in 2011 was for a cool $200,000, while that increased to $350,000 by 2013. Not exactly chump change!
Has Ellen Pompeo ever hinted at leaving the show?
The show pretty much revolves around Meredith Grey, so Pompeo surely knows that she has the upper hand. Has she ever hinted at leaving? Well, according to E! Online, she actually has.
At one point, Pompeo considered the show to be somewhat “toxic,” and she was looking for an escape. She felt that there was too much tension on the set during the first ten years of Grey’s Anatomy and seriously considered leaving altogether.
We are certainly glad that she didn’t, because no one could have imagined that the show would still be going strong to this day. What made Pompeo tough it out? It was because she was raising a family at that point, and knew that the steady work and security that came along with it.
The fate of the show depends on Meredith Grey
Often time, it isn’t too hard to replace a character who decides to make a swift exit from a television show, but in Pompeo’s case, that is highly unlikely to ever happen.
The show revolves completely around her character, Meredith Grey, and without Pompeo, it just wouldn’t work. Although no one knows if season 17 will be the end, that decision will be made between Pompeo herself and Shonda Rhimes, who has said she would return as long as Pompeo does.
Fans hope Pompeo will have the desire to continue on in her role as Meredith Grey for many years to come, as the fate of the show depends completely upon her.
