The First Confirmed Show on Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network Isn’t What You Think

Chip and Joanna Gaines built their Magnolia empire on one simple concept — they were good at making things look pretty.

Their road to fame began when HGTV producers caught a glimpse of a home renovation that Joanna Gaines worked on. After shooting a pilot episode for a potential show, everyone was smitten with this adorable couple. Fixer Upper became the most-watched show on the network and just like that, Joanna Gaines was a household name.

But eventually, the Gaines family found they’d become too busy and decided to stop filming the show. Fans were disappointed — until Chip and Jo announced that they’d be starting their own television network, which will premiere in 2020. We’ve been eagerly waiting for details on the new content.

We finally have an answer… it’s just not what everyone expected.

The first Magnolia network show will be about a band

After spending years showing everyone how to achieve that coveted farmhouse chic aesthetic through home renovation projects, their first official show on Magnolia network seems like a curious choice. This week, the Gaineses announced that they were producing a six-episode series called Home on the Road that tells the story of their favorite band, Johnnyswim.

The band is comprised of husband and wife duo Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez, who spend their life touring along with their young children Joaquin, 4, and Luna, 1. The Gaineses have been outspoken fans for years.

The Johnnyswim series fills the need for lifestyle content

At first glance, the Gaineses’ decision to produce a docu-series about a band seems strange. But it actually makes a whole lot of sense. Instead of sticking to one formula — home renovation projects — Chip and Joanna are developing a lifestyle brand.

That’s because this couple knows that Fixer Upper was successful not just for the pretty homes, but also for the dynamic between the Gaines family. Fans tuned in to see glimpses of Chip and Joanna joking around and hanging out with their kids in addition to the big reveal at the end.

And they know fans will love Johnnyswim just as much. “Amanda and Abner are magnetic,” Chip and Joanna Gaines said, as reported by People. “Ever since we met them a little over five years ago, we’ve been drawn to the way they navigate family, community, and life on the road.”

“They’re not just musicians, they’re storytellers and together, they are a true picture of the relentless pursuit of following a dream and making it a reality; but their dream doesn’t stop with them—it’s extended to their family and fans and everyone they meet.”

What other shows will be on the Magnolia network?

Though Home on the Road is the only confirmed show so far, we should be getting more information about what type of content the Magnolia network will have closer to the launch date. And while Fixer Upper probably won’t be coming back to television — at least not in its original form — we can expect some renovation content.

For example, Chip and Joanna Gaines recently announced they’ll be taking on the massive task of renovating a historic building in downtown Waco and transforming it into a hotel. Fans predict the cameras will be rolling during the process and we’ll get to see the process in some form on the new network.

With Chip and Joanna Gaines, we know whatever they do will be amazing!
